Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

Prayers for everyone, especially those who must for some reason stay. I was caught up in Hurricane Betsy back in the mid sixties. I'm sure some bozo will state that these things are "nothing" because they've been through a nor'easter, but I've been through both, and given my druthers, I'd take a nor'easter any day. And this one looks much worse than Betsy.

"In a hypothetical situation projected by his computers, Dr. Suhayda continued, a slow-moving Category 4 hurricane, with winds up to 155 miles an hour, or a Category 5 hurricane with even stronger winds could leave water 30 feet deep on this neighborhood street, which is more than five feet below sea level. Fox isn't doing that, but even if this happens, it's still going to be catastrophic. Just look at the size of this thing--the bands extend for what looks to be around a hundred or so miles.

Good opportunity to read the historical accounts of the Storm of 1900 which almost destroyed the island of Galveston, TX. After that storm, the City of Galveston on the island was raised about 15 feet and the Seawall was built to protect Galveston from future hurricanes.

You may be thinking the Metrodome in Minneapolis, or some of the other newer domed stadiums. I'm pretty sure the Superdome roof is concrete and steel, at least it looks like it from all the pictures I've seen.

I'm gobsmacked by this hurricane. Last I heard it was at 110 mph, now 175 and strengthening? Oh my God.
