Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.
Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

New thread--prayers to all in Katrina's path. Local officials warning of complete levy failures throughout low lying areas of Louisiana.
Thanks for the new thread...
Bump
the media is STARTING to set us up for the "NEVER MIND!" near miss to the east...
My prayers for all Involved BUMP!
Bump to new thread.
Prayers for everyone, especially those who must for some reason stay. I was caught up in Hurricane Betsy back in the mid sixties. I'm sure some bozo will state that these things are "nothing" because they've been through a nor'easter, but I've been through both, and given my druthers, I'd take a nor'easter any day. And this one looks much worse than Betsy.
Jefferson Parrish - dusk to dawn curfew
Amen!
Hey does anyone remember the band 'Katrina and the Waves' from the early 80s?
"In a hypothetical situation projected by his computers, Dr. Suhayda continued, a slow-moving Category 4 hurricane, with winds up to 155 miles an hour, or a Category 5 hurricane with even stronger winds could leave water 30 feet deep on this neighborhood street, which is more than five feet below sea level. The Jefferson Parish press conference is making my jaw drop.
thanks for new thread and all your hard work in keeping these threads going
Thanks. I now feel relieved of the duty to catch up on the 300 or so posts I missed on the other thread when I took a few minutes for some breakfast.
Ya I posted to the weirdo...what a nut!
Fox isn't doing that, but even if this happens, it's still going to be catastrophic. Just look at the size of this thing--the bands extend for what looks to be around a hundred or so miles.
Jefferson Parish President just said we are "in effect" in a Martial Law situation.
Agreed ... Michael, can you put those links up on Live Thread V? "as close to martial law as you will see in Louisiana" Holy Crap!!!

The Superdome will be open as a refuge of last resort for those with special medical needs only at 8 a.m. tomorrow. Citizens must call (504) 568-3200 to verify that they qualify for admittance to the shelter. Phone lines will be open beginning at 7 a.m.
Here ya' go
Good opportunity to read the historical accounts of the Storm of 1900 which almost destroyed the island of Galveston, TX. After that storm, the City of Galveston on the island was raised about 15 feet and the Seawall was built to protect Galveston from future hurricanes.
"Walkin' on Sunshine", right? (Can't believe I remember that [shudder] )
How ironic.
Why doesn't a category 6 exist?
I have a question about the SuperDome. Isn't the dome/roof made of plastic or fabric? Is that going to hold up in heavy winds?
What are they saying at the Jefferson press conference?
I was in Betsy too, and it was horrible, but dear God!!! this is the Abyss heading for New Orleans! My prayers for everyone involved!
The item on the SuperDome not being opened until tomorrow was dated YESTERDAY, so it MAY be opened today.
the streaming links are at the top of this thread, and the last thread...
Geez .. did you jsut hear the email the Brian Wilson read on FNC about the snakes?
On Fox, they're finally talking about the danger I remember most: the snakes after the hurricane was over. Poisonous snakes. I'll bet you remember those, too.
The Superdome was opened this morning for people with special needs.
Basically----- Get the F*** out! NOW
"You haven't seen anything yet until you see what we're about to see." It is end of the world stuff. Now talking about last minute road rage.
I can't believe that they don't have some plan in place to help the elderly and the stranded tourists get out of town on busses or trains or something! What will happen to those people?

Fox says there are hundreds of people outside of the Dome waiting to get in. This just sounds like a disaster in the making, along with everything else about this storm.
Sorry, MizSterious, I know nothing about the SuperDome, I live up near the Canadian border. Perhaps another Freeper can answer your question.
Anyone got any streaming radio links? News/talk radio?
I heard on WDSU that the dome was going to be open to all comers (in dire need) at 12pm today, central.
Per FOX, people with suitcases standing outside of the arena...waiting to be let in.
Gonna' be ONE HUNKA MESS.
brrrrrrrrr !
Parish President basically telling presser that it won't be too long before it's everyone will be on their own.
You may be thinking the Metrodome in Minneapolis, or some of the other newer domed stadiums. I'm pretty sure the Superdome roof is concrete and steel, at least it looks like it from all the pictures I've seen.
I'm gobsmacked by this hurricane. Last I heard it was at 110 mph, now 175 and strengthening? Oh my God.
