A driver for the Rev. Al Sharpton led Ellis County sheriff's deputies on a nine-mile chase at speeds up to 110 mph before state troopers stopped the car, authorities said.
The driver was rushing Sharpton to the airport after his visit with anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan on Sunday at her camp outside President Bush's ranch in Crawford. The car carrying Sharpton and two other passengers was clocked doing 110 mph in a 65 mph zone on Interstate 35 in Ellis County in North Texas, said Lt. Danny Williams.
The car ignored deputies' attempts to stop it and continued speeding and weaving in and out of traffic before it was stopped, Williams said.
Calls Monday to Sharpton's spokeswoman were not immediately returned. A spokesman for his attorney, Michael Hardy, referred inquiries to the spokeswoman.
Deputies arrested Jarrett Barton Maupin, 43, of Phoenix. Maupin told the officers he was hurrying to get Sharpton to the airport. Deputies impounded the rented 2005 Lincoln.
Williams said his officers offered Sharpton and the other, unidentified passengers a ride to a hotel across the highway, but they declined and walked there instead.
Maupin posted a total of $1,000 in bonds on charges of evading arrest with a vehicle and reckless driving.

The vehicle, a 2005 Lincoln, was impounded after deputies contacted its owner, a rental car company.
"Avis officials requested that we impound it," Williams said.
Avis requested that the car be impounded. It seems that the occupants were violating the lease agreement by speeding 50 miles over the posted speed limit.
Perhaps he can borrow Jesse's... You know the expression:

The driver is responsible for not pulling over, not the passengers.Well, that's not exactly true..the Right Rev should have ordered the driver to stop immediately.

The simple fact-of-the-matter is that Reverend Al Sharpton is likely going to walk away from this speeding incident unscathed. I have no idea why fellow FReepers are desperately clinging to the notion that the driver was "following orders" and that charges will stick to Fat Al or anyone else in the car.
If a bunch of college kids riding in a sportscar use "peer pressure" to convince the driver to speed, do they ALL go to jail when pulled over by a state trooper? The answer is clearly, "No." The driver (in both cases) is the only one punished and the passengers are free to go.

"Sgt. Jeremy Osteen clocked the vehicle going 110 in a 65 mph zone," sheriff's Lt. Danny Williams said of the incident, which began at about 2 p.m. near the Forreston rest area on Interstate 35.
"At that point, Sgt. Osteen attempted to catch the vehicle, which continued at a high speed, weaving in and out of traffic," Williams said.
The chase continued for about nine miles to about the 400-mile marker, where Department of Public Safety troopers had set up, Williams said. "The troopers were waiting and were able to get in front of the vehicle and slow it down. The vehicle finally came to a stop at the 401-mile marker, which is at (U.S. Highway) 287 Business." The driver, Jarrett Barton Maupin, 43, of Phoenix, Ariz., was taken into custody without incident. He has since posted bonds totaling $1,000 on two charges: evading arrest/detention with a vehicle and reckless driving.
Maupin told the officers he was in a hurry trying to get Sharpton, a former New York senatorial candidate who vied for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004, and two other passengers to the airport. Sharpton had been in Crawford earlier in the day to visit with Cindy Sheehan, who lost a son in the war with Iraq. Sheehan has been leading a several weeks long protest near President George Bush's ranch.
