Me, too, Kelly. That's why I just donated to Catholic Charities.

THE SALVATION ARMY READY TO FEED VICTIMS AND FIRST RESPONDERS IN WAKE OF HURRICANE KATRINA

THE SALVATION ARMY READY TO FEED VICTIMS AND FIRST RESPONDERS IN WAKE OF HURRICANE KATRINA

The Salvation Army will dispatch the vehicles to areas identified by state and local disaster management officials, including clean-up sites, emergency shelters and flooded regions.

In preparation for Katrina, all Salvation Army units in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi were activated to coordinate and stock mobile canteens and to prepare a variety of other aid to victims and emergency relief personnel. The Salvation Army also distributes clean-up kits, containing brooms, mops, buckets and cleaning supplies. Other resources provided include drinking water, shower units, and first aid supplies.

Food and supplies were placed in areas on Sunday afternoon, where they will be kept at a safe distance from coastal and inland storm-surge regions ... yet close enough to be moved immediately after the storm to meet the needs of victims and first-responders. Operation Blessing and the Southern Baptist churches, collaborating nonprofit agencies, will assist The Salvation Army in providing food and transportation.

Because of the unpredictability of this historic storm, The Salvation Army has an additional 200 mobile feeding vehicles available, if necessary, and another 125 special vehicles designated for disaster response throughout the Southeast.

For information on ways to assist The Salvation Army in meeting the needs of the victims of Katrina, persons may call 1-800-SALARMY.

The damage done by this hurricane to New Orleans is going to rival the tsunamis...

At the risk of sounding derogatory to the tsunami victims, the majority of the damaged caused then was to 3rd world, relatively primitive areas (albeit, the damage was terrible).

With New Orleans, we are talking about a major player in the trade routes of the Mississippi River.

Good, hard-working, honest people have lost everything they have ever worked for.

If you can't afford to give relief, then just pray.

No it is not lame. We too want to donate and are retired.
I was thining of the Salvation Army as well, but now thinking about giving some to Catholic Charities.

I cannot shake my bad feelings about The Red Cross

**If you can't afford to give relief, then just pray.**

Absolutely! (In fact, I was thinking of linking this with the prayer threads.)

"How many of all those PEACE LOVERS from Crawford's Camp "FACE TIME" are rushing to the coast to help?"

If they are rushing there it is to take part in the looting.

I just contributed to both Catholic Charities online and American Red Cross online. I decided to let bygones be bygones with the ARC. They will be able to do a lot of good in this effort, too, I hope. I said here I wouldn't contribute to them again, but if one person gets needed help down there, it's not worth petty grievances. May God apply the donations to help and save as many people as possible, especially the poorest of the poor.

I am pretty proud of our church, it is pretty small and we raised over $4700 for tsunami relief and I'll bet we'll get even more since this hits so close to home.

Are there any Freepers who are in need? If there is I would love to also donate directly to them, after all, charity begins at home.

I'd rather donate to Catholic Charities than the Red Cross.

I agree.

I am wondering that as well. I looked up ebay's giving program this morning and I rarely sell things that are high-priced so nothing I sell would make their cut of $10 minimum. Plus, I couldn't find the local charities listed, let alone the Salvation Army or Catholic Charities USA??

I guess I can just sell the items and give the $$ to the charities without letting ebay do it.

(thank you, for your earlier comment. if i lived closer, I'd open my home... but I don't so am trying to think of any way I can help...)
