NEW ORLEANS (AP) With much of the city emptied by Hurricane Katrina, some opportunists took advantage of the situation by looting stores.
snip...
Denise Bollinger, a tourist from Philadelphia, stood outside and snapped pictures in amazement.
"It's downtown Baghdad," the housewife said. "It's insane. I've wanted to come here for 10 years. I thought this was a sophisticated city. I guess not."
snip...
Around the corner on Canal Street, the main thoroughfare in the central business district, people sloshed headlong through hip-deep water as looters ripped open the steel gates on the front of several clothing and jewelry stores.
snip...
Looters filled industrial-sized garbage cans with clothing and jewelry and floated them down the street on bits of plywood and insulation as National Guard lumbered by.
snip...
"To be honest with you, people who are oppressed all their lives, man, it's an opportunity to get back at society," he said.

Get back at society for what? I was just watching it on Fox News. The homies are stealing everything that isn't nailed down.

As a friend of mine put it after a visit to New Orleans it's the only city that turned its ghetto into a tourist attraction.

The thieves stayed for a reason. They risked their lives to be able to be in a position to loot before citizens returned.

The welfare, school lunch programs, AFDC, WIC, food stamps, SSI, Medicaid, midnight basketball, and government subsidized housing made me do it.

I did not see one white person looting the stores they showed on TV. All that I saw were black. We will all pay for this. Sad thing is the owners of the stores were very likely black.

To: philsfan24
Unfortunately, it seems that every single city in this country would have looters who take advantage of a massive tragedy. This Denise Bollinger shouldn't be looking at it so naively.

I just hope the official emphasis remains on search, rescue, and evacuation, rather then property. Much of this junk will have to be written off anyway. The city looks like a total loss.

This is why I decided some time ago that I never wanted to go back to New Orleans. It's a dirty city full of vice and panhandlers. Last time we were there, it was about three months after Mardis Gras and they still hadn't taken down the bleachers or cleaned up the streets. filthy place. I'm glad the damage wasn't any worse but it's an armpit.

First off, it's "martial law". Second, martial law has NOT been declared for NO - just dusk to dawn curfew. Lastly, the police and Nat'l Guard have more important issues than looter to deal with right now.

The local politicos have looted the city for decades; now the boyz n girlz in the hood are finishing off the job. I wonder if they're clever enough to get their booty (and their booties) out of the rising lake that used to be Nawlins?
Even Vic and Nat'ly coulda seen this comin'...

Every picture tells a story, don't it?
And these pictures speak volumes, they should be shot. Urban terrorist thugs, too stupid to evacuate, too ig'nint to know right from wrong, and born without morals.
