Census: Garden State Is Nation's Richest
Aug 30, 2005 5:19 pm US/Eastern
With its concentration of wealthy bedroom communities near New York and Philadelphia, New Jersey is the richest state in the country, according to Census Bureau data released Tuesday.
The median, or midpoint, of household income in the nation was $44,684 last year, while in New Jersey it was $61,359. National per capita income _ the average income earned per person _ was $24,020 nationally, but $30,485 in New Jersey. Connecticut was No. 2, at $60,528.

While the percentage of people living in poverty in 2004 was 13 percent across the nation, in New Jersey it was 8.5 percent.
With its proximity to the New York and Philadelphia, the Garden State has some of the nation's wealthiest bedroom communities. Annual incomes, particularly just across the Hudson River from Manhattan, are typically among the nation's highest.
One area where New Jersey's statistics do mirror the nation is the number of people lacking health insurance. Nationally that figure in 2004 was 15.7 percent; in New Jersey it was 15.3.
Some observers were alarmed at the increase _ almost 8 percentage points in four years _ in the number of New Jerseyans paying more than 35 percent of their income in rent.

I'm not surprised by this.
All right, here's what we do: immediately impose an 80% tax on the richest state's citizens, and distribute that amount to the rest of us poor folk in the other 49. <\Ted Kennedy>
But I thought the rich voted Republican?
I always loved pointing out how the poorest states (Alabama, Mississsippi etc) are all heavily republican while the wealthiest states are all heavily liberal
Actually, the richest States tend to vote democrat
To be fair, the three richest counties in New Jersey (Morris, Somerset and Hunterdon) voted for Bush in both 2000 and 2004.
Hunterdon??????????
Yep.
Where the hell is that? What towns?
People tend to forget that the most conservative counties in NJ are the "highland" counties. South Jersey (with the exception of Ocean and Cape May Counties) has voted uniformly Democratic the last four election cycles. Add those to the highly populated (and heavily Democratic) urban counties in the NE corner of the state and you have a Dem state.
The Doris Duke vote...
Raritan, Lambertville, aka Chrissie Whitman/Horse Country. Freeper OldFriend lives there and can tell you more if you ask nicely.
The school funding formula will put an end to this. It is a black hole of money that can consume taxes without limit. There is a perverse incentive built in that rewards districts who do poorly with ever increasing piles of cash. Right now, Jersey is doing well, so nobody seems to mind. But the state will not be able to bear this burden forever. Taxes are getting to a point where people are starting to avoid the state, and are staying in NY and Philly instead. Who wants to move out to the 'burbs for the priviledge of paying $12,000 a year for school taxes, $9,000 of which their own town's schools will never see?
As soon as Jersey is no longer a reletive bargain, the bedroom community engine that powers the economy will start to work in reverse. But the school funding formula will continue to try to wring out ever-increasing sums of money from the tax base, and will drive New Jersey into the cellar.
So did Sussex County, hey I must be rich!
bump
Conservative counties are overwhelmed by the dems and fraud in the urban areas of the state.
We just couldn't be seen associating with rif raf such as you.
What eva were you thinking
/really bad snob impression.
and surcharges.
We already have a socialist redistribution of money within NJ.
Don't want to get too specific because someone might figure out where my underground bunker is, but in my particular horse country town, the dems have not even put up a candidate in the local elections in the past 10 years. Bush won here in 2004 about 2 to 1.

It's hilarious to note NJ voting Democrat in the last two elections. The liberals in NYC and Washington sit wondering why all those red states "vote against their economic interests", begging the question that Democrat policies would help them. Here, in their own front yard is a "wealthy" state voting for people who promise to tax them more.
Nor am I. Didn't NJ beat out Connecticut a year or so ago?
NJ and CT have alternated since the early 90s. NJ has been the wealthiest state for the last four years, however.
I'm not one of them.
Well I visited my Republican M.D. cousin yesterday in Tenafly, NJ, near the George Washington Bridge. He bought his house in 1980 for $100,000. Now it is worth close to $2 million and his property taxes areeeeeeeeee... $36,000 per year! (And he just helped his son buy another one down the street!!!!)
