To repair one of the levees holding back Lake Pontchartrain, officials late Tuesday dropped 3,000-pound sandbags from helicopters and hauled dozens of 15-foot concrete barriers into the breach. Maj. Gen. Don Riley of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said officials also had a more audacious plan: finding a barge to plug the 500-foot hole.
You can string smaller barges together, and work from them to shore up the levee. Only problem is most barges run on the Mississippi River, not on the Lake...
At least the Astrodome has AC!
The Astros play in a new stadium...Minute Maid Park, aka the "Juice Box."
Yep, I know. Formerly Enron Field.
I live in Houston and I, also, would very much prefer our resouroces be spent to aid Americans, rather than illegal Mexican aliens. Our fellow-countrymen need our help.
This might make a difference as to how the Militia is received. There is a group coming to the area which is supposed to watch and report on immigration violations, which are plentiful.
LOL that's right...I forgot about that.
It's an interesting field they play on...with the hill in center field.
I wasn't referring specifically to Houston . I meant anywhere.
The National Guard was keeping everyone in the dome, and they certainly would not admit anyone carrying a sack full of loot.

Great post AM. I think it is a decent plan. Once they get to Houston, they can be triaged, many will go to relatives etc. And once the rest are under the FEMA umbrella, they will be given money etc and will not be roaming the streets of Houston penniless and hungry.
Plus "The Coldest Foam in the Dome" is like $7 for a 12oz cup. What a rip.
Bring eh all, I believe the Astrondome has a capacity of something like 80,000 to 90,000.
I live in Houston too and I say bring'm here if they need a place. These people are in a bad way. Many are old, weak and hungry. I feel bad for them.
This is no time to worry about what problems these people may bring to us. We're Texans and can handle this and these folks need any help we can provide.
Well said, and God Bless ... now about that kid you let go to a&m! ;-)
***It sounds like a good idea to me. They need a fairly large place with working bathrooms, etc. They can always reassess but they need to get these people out of the Superdome.***
And the Astrodome is AIR CONDITIONED.
It's 347 miles from New Orleans to Houston, Tx. It takes about 5 1/2 hours to travel between the two cities. Those 400 buses with an average of 58 on board each would only have to make one trip each.
That's seats. Here with no flooding and no leaks we can use the entire playing field, much better than seats.
My thoughts exactly... It takes time to set up tent cities, and this place could be a temp home after a long bus trip. They have to go somewhere short term!
Well then their relatives should be responsible for coming to pick them up, send money for airline tickets or whatever. The government can't deliver everyone to their family's doorsteps. At this point, they're lucky to be rescued out of N.O.
I second your comments Aggie Mama. Bring 'em here!!! We need to quit focusing on the bad lots of the group and realize there are normal folks in the bunch who need help. I sure would hope if Houston got hit by a natural disaster other communities nearby would offer such assistance.
Nice attitude and good points.
From one Aggie mama to another :-)
