NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Fox News scored its largest audience so far this year in August, a month when most of the other cable news channels suffered ratings declines in comparison with convention-heavy 2004.
According to data released Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research, Fox News tallied slightly more than 2 million total viewers in primetime during the month, a 32% improvement over its year-ago figures.
By contrast, CNN lost 19% of its primetime viewership (to 748,000), and MSNBC dropped 22% to 349,000 in August compared with a year ago. CNN's Headline News, on the strength of "Nancy Grace" and other primetime programming, jumped 117% to 449,000 viewers, making it the third-ranked news channel in primetime, overtaking MSNBC.
In the news demographic of adults 25-54, Fox News ruled again, with 541,000 viewers, up 12%, while CNN lost 9% to 236,000 and MSNBC was mostly flat at 145,000. Headline News averaged 160,000, up 111%.
Fox News owned 11 of the top 12 shows in cable news, with 2.5 million viewers for No. 1 "The O'Reilly Factor" (up 13%) and 2.2 million viewers for "On the Record With Greta Van Susteren." Greta Van Susteren's show, which has seen a major boost in the ratings with its coverage of the Natalee Holloway story in Aruba, saw a 36% boost in viewership.
CNN's sole entry in the top 10, "Larry King Live," saw viewership fall 27% to 1 million. "The Situation Room," which debuted this month, averaged 466,000 viewers, down 14% compared to the political-heavy coverage on CNN last year. On the other hand, "Nancy Grace" gave Headline News its highest month ever, with 738,000 viewers in August. That was just behind "NewsNight With Aaron Brown" and "Paula Zahn Now"; "Paula Zahn Now" saw its total viewership rise 6% to 596,000, though its demo coverage was flat.
Fox News also won the ratings war in hurricane coverage Monday, according to Nielsen data released Tuesday afternoon. Fox News averaged 2.8 million viewers in total day -- a 247% increase over the same day in 2004 -- ahead of CNN's 1.8 million viewers and MSNBC's 679,000
Does anyone remember a few weeks ago, at a Presidential news conference, when Scott McClellan (I think) was asked a question by a news reporter and it began with something like "On Fox News, a channel known for being supportive of your issues (or something like that)..." The media is jealous of the success of a competitor.
Yeah, I remember that, it was Terry Moran (or as I call him, Terry Moron) from ABC News. And it's true the only reason FNC looks to be a right-wing channel is because next to the far-left channels of CNN, MSNBC and the nets it does look conservative. What gets me is that people will say that someone like BO is conservative and that balances the nets or CNN or whatever, the difference is BO minces no words and lets everyone know his show is an opinion show, or "news analysis" as he puts it, we don't hear that from Rather or Williams or Aaron Brown even though their news casts are filled with as much opinion as BO's. I get annoyed when these network clowns sit behind a desk and pretend to be objective, just be honest, they're Dean/Moore liberals, so just say so!
Another reason why FNC can't be considered a "conservative news channel" is because they are hardly a news channel at all - holloway, runaway bride, peterman, all that junk isn't news. As long as FNC has about 22.5 hours/day of tabloid crap and 1.5 hours or news, they cannot be considered a news channel. H&C is supposed to be a political debate show, they haven't covered anything but tabloid stories since the election almost a year ago. I can understand having one hour of tabloid per night (Greta, LKL, Rita) but please give us some real world news once in a while!
FNC viewership is doing great despite our complaints..
Aaron Brown is where I draw the line.
Please FReepmail me if you want on or off my FoxFan list. *Warning: This can be a high-volume ping list at times.
OUCH that not crash that disaster area for other networks LOL!
ABCNNBCBS just needs to learn that the truth will bring people back.
People do not want their left-leaning nonsense!
Thanks for the ping!
I'll be happy when there are four "Fox News" style channels that treat the conservative viewpoint fairly. Now we are one management/ownership change away from it becoming an MSNBC. I thank God for Fox News. I suffered through ABC/NBC/CBS/CNN for too many years. Don't underestimate the influence Fox has had on U.S. opinion and the furthering of our viewpoint in recent years, particularly with our past two close elections.
Here in Colorado Fox News reports and special segments are now airing on KCOL 600am and the 50,000 watt blow torch of the Rockies KOA 850am. I've never made an official count in one day's time yet, but I'd venture to guess that the name 'Fox News' is mentioned at least a few hundred times on the air each day. KCOL even presents itself as 'your Fox News radio station'.
The folks on KOA, namely reporter (and wacko blame/hate Bush leftist) John Em and left of center Colorado Morning News host April Zesbaugh resorted to replacing 'Fox News' with just 'Fox'. Someone at the station must have received complaints about this because they are now back to using 'Fox News'.
So here we are along the front range where up until August 7th, 2005 radio national news was dominated by ABC and CBS. Now the number one station in Colorado is 'Fox News Radio'. This can only be good news for the ratings for the Fox News Channel.
On top of all that, I haven't watched a minute of Fox News since they hired that @sshole Geraldo Rivera Jerry Rivers.
Fox News does an outstanding job! Fox & Friends is great, and Shep Smith, and Jane Skinner, and Neil Cavuto, and Brit Hume and the Fox All-Stars, and Bill O'Reilly, and Hannity and Colmes, and Greta, etc., etc. etc. (and all the folks on the weekend) ... (and new to Fox News Bill Hemmer) ... And Geraldo does an excellent job as well. If you do not like Geraldo just do not tune in for the two hours that he is on each weekend.
The people here at FR who whine and complain about Fox News ought to pool their money and start their own news channel.
But now Aruban Authorities have released all three prisoners to get Fox News to return and fill the empty hotel rooms
I guess they won in Natalee Hollway coverage. You may complain, but the results speak for themselves.
"People who watch Faux news are sheep."
DU quote after finding out that once again, the Communist News Network its satellites are rapidly approaching the Mendoza Line.
Maybe one day, people who vote Democrat will wake up and see that their party has been taken over by Stalin wannabees.
I'll only be happy when Fox outdraws the major networks and not just other cable nets. That would be a huge victory. The fact is the alpabet nets easily outdraw Fox. The success of Fox is just a start. If it would make the major nets more responsible, that would be a measure of success too. Since I never watch the big three nets any more (unless a gun is held to my head or I'm a captive audience), I don't know if the big three are making any effort to be more responsible. I assume that they are not.
The Fox afternoon shows (Shep, Cavuto, Bret) are far superior to the evening shows...especially Bret's. The evening shows are usually a waste of time. O'Reilly can be good occasionally, but he too still does too much sensational stuff.
When you look up clueless liberal in the dictionary, there is a picture of Olbermann next to it. He is by far the dumbest clueless liberal I've ever seen.
It is all due to Geraldo and Greta. (kidding)
This is priceless! And I remember that puppet! What's his name?
It's Howdy Doody Time!! lol!
