Oriana Fallaci met Pope, Vatican confirms

Vatican, Aug. 31 (CWNews.com) - Vatican officials have confirmed that Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) met with the controversial Italian journalist Oriana Fallaci at his summer residence in Castel Gandolfo on August 27.

Although the meeting was not intended to be publicized, friends of Fallaci leaked news of the writer's meeting with the Pontiff, and the Vatican verified the reports.

Fallaci has been an outspoken critic of immigration trends in Europe, saying that the demographic trend amounts to an "Islamic invasion." She currently faces charges in Italian courts for allegedly insulting the Islamic faith. Fallaci, who suffers from cancer, has said that she will not live long enough for the complaints against her to come to trial.

The Italian journalist, who refers to herself as an atheist Christian, has praised Pope Benedict for his defense of Europe's Christian patrimony. But she has also criticized the Pope for his willingness to engage in dialogue with Muslim leaders.

Wow. That Miss Fallaci would leave New York in her condition.

Is Castle Gandolfo in Italy or in Vatican City? I can't imagine she'd risk getting arrested in Italy, as they are after her, but then again she has guts

Gutsy of Benedict to meet her. He's going to get grief for this.

It's an Islamic invasion alright. Unless their govt takes action, we're looking an Islamic majority in Europe in years to come.

Yes, I'm surprised she would go to Italy, with the trial
and all.

Glad for her though, she is one tough lady.

Castle Gandolfo is in Italy, so Oriana took quite a risk to get there. She is a brave and brilliant woman and it is a shame that she won't be with us much longer.

I bet it was great, the back and forth between two giant intellects.

The papal villa overlooks Lake Castelgandolfo, not far from Rome. I spent a lovely day with friends on the lake while I lived in the Eternal City and saw the villa.

Is it just me, or does anyone else detect a hint of "religious" content to this thread?

There should be a forum for threads like this here on FR....

Fallaci isn't religious.

Oh, is "Fallaci" a person? I thought it referred to the pope's interpretation of the Bible....

Take it up with the ACLU or Barry Lynn.

Fallaci is a rare voice of reason and warning for Europe about Islamofacism. This Pope knows it.
