Why so? A "rant" suggests a wildly extravagant or exaggerated descriptive. Yours was not that at all! It was an exercise in good common sense with a correct and observant perspective and apparently sincere. I applaud your effort. I try to do the same and it only descends into a "rant' when the RATS get to close to my traditional values sensibilities.

At one point you pondered upon...."How history might judge him" referring to HST. Had you lived in his time and observed him you'd realize that Harry NEVER concerned himself with how history would judge him. He was closer to being a 'statesman' than a mere 'politician'. That is to say he ACTED, based upon his assessment of what was the RIGHT THING to do. Mere 'politicians' are pussilanemous prevaricators in the main and REACT to what their advisors and the polls dictate. For a deeper insight into Hit 'em Harder Harry (as I preferred to refer to him), if you're interested, I suggest "Truman", by David McCullough, a genuinely enjoyable and accurate read.

very good article thanks. The past week I have been on Vancouver Island listening to the BBC news and reading Canadian newspapers. There is a really interesting article in the Financial Section of the Post that discusses where the blame for failures in rescuing folks and preparing for the hurricane should really go. It is an interesting article.

Thank you for reading

Thanks for writing. I have no intentions of backing away from the President. Those who use the public stage to attack him are the exact people most responsible for the hellish first days. They are the people who didn't identify the risk and prepare for the risk...they are the ones who let people down. As Pataki said last night in response to the call for a cabinet level coordinator...we don't need a bureaucrat in Washington, we need local leadership.

Did you see my FReep mail re the counter-protest ..??

I have also contacted the Veternas Museum and Memorial Center and ask them if they have any Veterans who are willing to join us.

So far, we have 5-6 people who have committed to the FReep. Let me know if you can make it.

Hey, thanks.

Interesting reading that after what has transpired over the last 3 months, huh? I'd say we stuck by the Pres pretty well? I can barely remember the mood I was in when I wrote that thing.

It is going to be quite a year.

You, me and a lotta others have hung right in there. I wish I could say as much for our contingent in the Senate. The GOP in the House are far less wobbly, and even they go too soft. But, for all that, I think GWB has really stuck right in there and run a pretty tight ship. No, he isn't perfect; he's human. I'd be the first to shout "glory, hallelujah" to hear him abandon his insane position on illegal immigration, but, seeing everything that's transpired, and seeing all of the earth-shaking decisions hes had laid on his plate, I wouldn't trade him for any of the others who ran for the job; not in this past election, nor in 2000.

I don't walk lockstep with him, and I'm certainly not a GOP clone, but, when push comes to shove, I voted for him, and I'll find my voice to back him up against all comers.

And, yes, it WILL be quite a year. I predict 2006 will be another significant entry for the history books.
