Dennis Prager: Astrodome inadequate. Take the Katrina victims into your home
http://www.dennisprager.com/ ^

Posted on 09/02/2005 11:18:26 AM PDT by EveningStar

Dennis Prager has just suggested that folks open up their homes to Katrina victims. Invite them to stay there for a month. The Astromdome is not the place to house people. The state is not the proper entity to take care of these victims. The citizens should do it. Dennis himself is going to open up his home to a family.

Dennis is a great person.

The question is: are you opening your home to a young mother and her two kids, or are you opening your home to an adult male drug addict who committed rape before he left the Superdome?

I would not take in just any random evacuee because my first responsibility is to my wife and children. I would not be able to take in a suspicious person and leave for work in the morning in good conscience.

There is a grassroots movement here in San Antonio( and surrounding area) to house some of the people coming into San Antonio. Some are worried about who these people are( are they the mutts shooting the relief workers etc) but most everyone else is seriously discussing it. Let's hope half of the ones who claim to be willing to help actually will

This will probably happen over time. As relief workers get to know who they are dealing with. They can figure out who can be trusted and place them.

Without the hurricane the good citizens of NO committed 7X more murder than any other city in the U.S. I don't think I'd take them in for coffee much less for a month.

Prager should have suggested utilizing closed military bases..they've got secure perimeters, barracks, messhalls, infirmaries.

And the residents could get some sort of Workfare maintaining the places.

I am sorry but I've seen with my own eyes what these people will do. They are not my neighbors. And will not be.

Yeah ... right.

Methinks good old Dennis needs to give his address out to the internet so everyone will know where to bed down.

Lots of professional people have lost everything. Some are managers, some may even have owned their own businesses. This tragedy cuts across all classes.

I understand that.

The fact remains that anyone who invites a complete stranger into their home in this day and age, questions unasked, is putting their family in danger.

I would guess that at least 10% of the evacuees have been through the criminal justice system at some point and I would like to know whether I have a violent offender on my hands before I billet him.

I'm willing to take somebody in. But it's going to be a "trust, but verify" thing.

Dennis has already said that he will take in some people for a month. He is sincere.
