Ungrateful People

In the middest of the chaos and despair, that is in the City of New Orleans, there have been people waiting for at least three days for food and water. The media has been squawking the loudest about the slowness of the food convoys. When a truckload of MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) finally arrived in to help feed the masses, that have not had any food or water; you would think that these people would be grateful.
That seems to be not the case in the eyes of some people. Yes, that is right, there are some people that have refused to have anything to do with the MREs. A case in point, a woman that was hollering the loudest about not having anything to eat, was handed an MRE and refused it. The reason? It had not been heated.
Well sister, I hope that you can live for a few more days. It is going to quite awhile before there is any way to serve up any hot meals. The only way that there might be any hot food, is if you build a campfire and cook food that way. I doubt that you would be able to find any food to cook over a campfire anyway, as the government wont there to hand out the food to cook or to make the fire for you.
If our troops in the field in Iraq and Afghanistan can gain weight by eating MREs, surely you can subsist on these for a few days. The same troops that are subsisting on these MREs and have been for the last 2.5 years, seem to take it all in stride as a part of doing business.

Well forget her. When she gets hungry enough she'll eat one cold.

Taking care of them is job one and doing the right thing should be thanks enough.

I don't know what sort of MRE's were distributed but most of the dinner entrees are indeed unfit to eat without being heated. I am not defending the rabble but the 'ready to eat' portion of MRE needs to have the fine print read.

MMMMM!!!! MRE! Oh yes! My favorite were the BBQ weiners! The only thing I could never really stomach was Chicken Ala-King...yech...:-)
I was USAF/AD for 13 years and gained weight on the things. :-) Everybody else though (USAF weenies) seemed to hate em though.

I'd rather do a deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan than deploy to New Orleans. At least the people in those countries show gratitude.

"Ungrateful" - are you for real, or just a bit dim? This is not a term anyone with an ounce of compassion would use to describe someone stranded in New Orleans right now. Shame on you.

Any source? Or are we to not only believe ~you~ on this story, but also make this attitude representative of all those people?
Why post this?
You want to discourage rescuers from helping?
You want people to stop wanting to donate?
Or do you wasn to feel justified if you do nothing?

I saw a woman on FOX at the Astrodome complaining about the MREs at the SuperDome. I'd have told her to shut up and be greatful. She was negligent by not evacuating when told and not having proper emergency rations for such a storm. The gaul of some people...
To: hiredhand
I saw it live on Bill O'Reilly last night. She acted like she was offended to offered something our troops subsist on for days. Sorry it wasn't filet mignon to your liking lady.

That complaining woman should have read the bloody directions- there's a heating pouch in every MRE. All you do is add water to the heating pouch and put the meal pouch in it (and it gets so damn hot you can burn yourself with it). By the way- you don't need potable water to do this, floodwater would work perfectly well- and there's plenty of that around. Hell, you can even start the heating pouch with urine if you have to.

The more I think of this, the more I think that a hungry person who turns DOWN an MRE just isn't hungry ENOUGH yet. Now granted, I'd rather heat them up myself, but having no heat doesn't make them inedible. For this woman to say this with so many people who know otherwise makes her out to be a liar, or an idiot... or both.

Thanks for this post and your comments. Excuse my typo's as I type this, because a lot of this has so many upset. But your thoughts remind me, take me back, decades back, it was just past the Berkeley-Oakland city border in the S.F. Bay Area, some leftist group pulled in with a truck full of food - I actually can't remember what went wrong at the time, I think it was some sort of post-riot, in those days I was younger, more stupid, I drove over to the area to watch. I was probably 1972 or 1974. When did the "People's Temple" thing happen? Before or after that? I *think* it was the Jim Jones people, the Temple from S.F., they had the truck, the food. So I pull up, and the fools start to try and distribute the food to those who needed it - it starts going out of control. These people were not grateful - in fact, I recall the exact same words "it wasn't heated" and such. Then it starts to become violent, the food distribution turns into literally throwing the supplies from the truck out. Then the "people" who should be grateful, they are then literally attacking and looting the truck. Some start to throw cans in a violent manner at each other, and at cars. I get out of there. Later the police had to come to save those who wanted to distribute the food.
I recall years ago, I actually went along with some charity to distribute food in S.F. near the Mayor's office. This was the first, and only time, I would do so. It wasn't a good experience. I remember being given instructions on how the distribution would work, as the vehicles where parked, then as a table was setup, and the operation started. I could not even believe what I started seeing. They would take the plate of food, taste it, these were druggies, drunks, as well as younger punk types who were bums and all, and would THROW the plate down on the ground as if the food wasn't good enough. It got much worse. I decided to leave on my own. We were being threatened as well. I heard only two "thank you(s)". It all comes down to moral values of these in the community on the receiving end. Really, that is what it comes down to. Sure, there was some good done, but over all, it was a scary experience. Scary, man.
To: hiredhand
Touting this kind of story can only SUCK the wind out of people who need our encouragement: the rescuers and those raising money and volunteers to bring aid.

I keep telling myself out of all the people affected so terribly, these are but a tiny percentage.

THERE IS NO FOOD AT THE SUPERDOME, THE MSM TELLS ME SO IT MUST BE TRUE
At the Superdome, the Haynes family eats military rations and even uses the box as a bed for four-month-old Alison. Lexus, age 4, left, and Ariel, 5, right, have been staying at the Superdome and will probably be there a few more days.

"Taking care of them is job one and doing the right thing should be thanks enough." You are right it "should be enough" but in all honesty, cripplecreek, I think we are getting tired as a Country and as individuals of being spat upon when we try to lend a helping hand.
The good feeling usually felt when helping someone seems to have disappeared at least in my heart.
I was thinking about driving my RV from Western New York to LA, AL, or MS to loan to one family but after seeing the rape of a city I'll stay home. I don't like feeling that way but that's how it is.

This woman is certainly not representative of the bulk of the people still in New Orleans, but there are, no doubt, some people there who just gripe and gripe and gripe about anything and everything people do for them.
Everyone should donate, generously, but I would never take a woman like this into my home, no matter how desperate she is.
