USCG via BBSNews 2005-08-30 - NEW ORLEANS (Aug. 29, 2005) - Petty Officer 1st Class Steven Huerta hoists two children into a Coast Guard rescue helicopter
Coast Guard to the rescue, again and again
09:51 AM CDT on Friday, September 2, 2005
The men and women of the Coast Guard have been flying countless rescue missions, pulling Katrina's exhausted victims to safety.
What is it that keeps these brave crews going in again and again to make daring rooftop rescues?
"I think it's the adrenalin that's, you know, pumping in, that you're helping so many people. You know you're getting into the action. We all became aviators so we could go out there and save lives," says Lt. Catherine Carabine, U.S. Coast Guard Pilot.
It is difficult and dangerous because of other aircraft, trees and powerlines.
A crew member lowers the basket and serves as the pilot's guide.
"Easy, forward and right. Hold. Basket is on deck, survivor getting in basket. Prepare to take the load. Take the load," says Lt. Tim Barelli, U.S. Coast Guard Pilot, guiding a basket to safety.
Barelli and Carabine pulled 106 people to safety in 48 hours. They were old and young and held tight to pets they would not leave.

KHOU-TV
A Coast Guard helicopter hovers overs a roof.
Always, there were more waiting.
As the crews rotate out, other crews rotate in. They say it will be like that for the foreseeable future.
From now on, they may carry something extra.
A man and his pregnant wife signaled them, not from the roof, but a top floor.
The helicopter's ax that was meant to free the crew in a crash was never meant for wood. It was meant to cut through aluminum
"We just used it as a regular ax, a regular firefighter ax and beat through the roof. Just started chopping away, chopping away at the roof," says CWO James Hines.
Now in a city still drowning in a flood, they will carry real fire axes for those who can't make it to the easy side of the roof.
Please, if you've seen good stories and pictures, please post them.
Ping.
Glad to see the often unhearlded US Coast Guard, with fewer members than the NY police department, mentioned. These guys/gals go about their business without much fanfare.
Roger that. :-)
"Our federal government isn't doing enough! I'm pissed!" -Mayor Nagin
Oh, Mr. Mayor, what is that group again, the UNITED STATES Coast Guard, the group of fine men and women who have risked their lives again and again and again to rescue YOUR citizens?
Praise without negativity is even better.
"SEMPER PARATUS" ("Always Ready")
These are true heroes... Always above their duty call...
"Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity." General George S. Patton
Glad to see the service I served in get well-deserved credit.
The members helping right now are a special breed.
They're getting some great press. I like to see that too.
And a shout-out to my 21 year old nephew who has proudly trained and serve with the Coast Guard for 3 years.
This is the branch of the military that is often forgotten but they provide a brave and valuable service guarding our shores and rescuing people from disaster.
Many don't know this, but they were FIRST IN LINE to go to the Katrina devastated areas and over 1500 lives have been saved as a result of their instant response.
Problem is they are really undermanned and underappreciated as my nephew told me. Really if anyone wants to be in military service, being one of the men and women in ORANGE is great training.
POP QUIZ : The Marine has "FROM THE HALLS OF MONTEZUMA", The Navy has "ANCHOR's AWEIGH", what is the theme of the Coast Guard ? ( bet few people even know ).
In this time of tragedy, this is the Coast Guard's finest hour.

Rubber Ducky?
Actually the answer you gave will be true only if Earnie joined the Coast Guard.
The correct answer is : SEMPER PARATUS (ALWAYS READY)
Here are the Lyrics :
Semper Paratus (Always Ready)
The United States Coast Guard Theme Song
From North and South and East and West,
The Coast Guard's in the fight.
Destroying subs and landing troops,
The Axis feels our might.
For we're the first invaders,
On every fighting field.
Afloat, ashore, on men and Spars,
You'll find the Coast Guard shield.
We're always ready for the call,
We place our trust in Thee.
Through howling gale and shot and shell,
To win our victory.
"Semper Paratus" is our guide,
Our pledge, our motto, too.
We're "Always Ready," do or die!
Aye! Coast Guard, we fight for you.
From Aztec shore to Arctic zone,
To Europe and Far East.
The Flag is carried by our ships,
In times of war and peace.
And never have we struck it yet,
In spite of foe-men's might,
Who cheered our crews and cheered again,
For showing how to fight.
We're always ready for the call,
We place our trust in Thee.
Through howling gale and shot and shell,
To win our victory.
"Semper Paratus" is our guide,
Our pledge, our motto, too.
We're "Always Ready," do or die!
Aye! Coast Guard, we fight for you.

The reporter who wrote this used to work in NO as well as now being in Houston. She knows more about what is happening perhaps than some of the non-locals.
Nice that someone gives the CG credit for the hard work they do. They deserve it.
I married a Coastie. It is the only service that seems to do their work without alot of fanfare. I'm glad they are finally getting some notice.
Sardogs every one!
I retired, but my son is now on watch, he leaves for NOLA in about a week.
bttt
I for one "love" the Coast Gaurd! I make a living over the ocean. They may be rescueing me one day! Go Coasties! Matter of fact they rescued one of my friends 9/1/05.
In So Cal.
Thanks! As a pleasure boater growing up, I understand!
