IEEE-USA LEGISLATIVE ACTION ALERT...PA
IEEE-USA ^ | Sept 2,2005 | dat mon

Posted on 09/02/2005 1:40:24 PM PDT by Dat Mon

PA CARE Members:

IEEE-USA has just posted an informative Action Alert on HB 1920, introduced into the Pennsylvania House of Representatives earlier this year. This bill is an attempt to reform your state's sales tax to provide funds for the state's local primary and secondary schools. One of the consequences of the bill would be the imposition of a 5% sales tax on engineers within Pennsylvania.

IEEE-USA has not taken a position on the bill because we usually do not take positions on state legislation. However, it is going to impact our PA members, so we wanted you to know about it.

IEEE Members who are interested in the bill can access IEEE-USA's Legislative Action Center here: https://www.capitolconnect.com/ieee. Access the site by using your IEEE Web Account login. The Action Alert is titled "PA Tax Reform To Impact Engineers" under "Current Issues."

If you feel IEEE-USA should be more active on this bill, or if you have questions about it, please contact me.

Thank you.

Russell T. Harrison Legislative Representative - Grassroots Affairs IEEE-USA (202) 530-8326

All members of IEEE in PA or anyone who hates big creeping tax and spend government, please contact your legislative rep in PA and fight this proposal. Here in PA we have some of the highest business and personal income taxes, sales taxes, business insurance, health insurance, auto insurance. Business is fleeing the state...and yet here we are again killing the emaciated golden goose of technology.

Okay. Whatever it is, I'm glad I don't live or work in PA. If there's somebody needing taxing in PA, it's their legislators. But then again, it sounds like they're over-taxed already trying to do their job correctly.

Punish engineers and the engineers will leave.

You bet.

People on this site may be sick of my rants on technology and engineering...but this kind of crap here shows you what we in the profession who also own businesses or do consulting face.

To me...it shows a total contempt and disregard for engineering and technology.

No politician would ever suggest taxing lawyers, or guys who cut lawns, or teamsters, or teachers, or heaven forbid...government workers!

It is simply stupid.

But that's okay. If they want to continue to destroy their technology base let them.

Now taxing lawyers... Hmmm... That's more like putting out shark repellent... That puts serious conflict in my principles...

It's the same thing in New Mexico, except worse. You pay sales tax on everything, including dentist bills.

Texas does charge sales taxes on drafting (including drawings generated by CAD), but only if the drawing is being done if contracted out. However if I am given a sketch and told to design it to make it work, then some engineering time is included (which is hard to separate out when I am on the CAD - yes an engineer that works with AutoCAD).
