It's law and good custom to give priority to invited guests and legal visitors. Personally, I find it despciable that the rough vice of treating guests worse by giving priority to residents has found so much support on FR and have to wonder exactly what kind of families the FReepers supporting such crudeness and rudeness come from.

Uhhh... somebody might want to do some research on this. I understand there was a large convention of doctors in this group. The convention was dealing with emergency health issues in a disaster. Bumping them to the head of the line just might have something to do with their ability to help out.

The City of New Orleans should most definitely give tourists priority in rescue, absolutely. Just like the USA should give foreign tourist priority in rescue, they are guests, they do not know the 'laid of the land" and their safety is our collective responsibility while they are in our country. It has been this way for a long long time and that is how US tourists are treated in other CIVILIZED countries.

Were it not so, other nations would have their militray in New Orleans right now getting thier people out, just like the USA has gone into other uncivilized countries to get it's (and other nations) people out.

Can anyone justify why the luxurious guests of the Hyatt were placed in line ahead of those that had been suffering in far worse conditions?

I can: because the rampaging locals wanted to kill them because the Hyatt guests were white.

It was a 'Schindler's List' type thing....

Simple.

There have been reports of bodies ridddled by bullet holes and bodies with heads blown off. More than likely they are white people.

The mayor and the National Guard may sense that the anarchy will INCREASE as long as white people are seen. After all, you have black "celebrities" on national television saying that "Bush does not care about blacks".

It is a correct call to make to get the whites out first, if the mayor and the security beleive that anarchy is rising and whites are the target. They need to eliminate the anarchy first so the evacuationa can continue.(Those members of the black ping list know that I am not white).

That was the mayor of N.O's idea. He will get it back in spades I imagine .

They probably would have been robbed and rapped if they were put with the regular crowd at the superdome . But it seems they were doing okay at the Hyatt.

These people are wealthy, pay a lot of taxes and probably create a lot of wealth when they are not on vacation. The sooner they get out of NO and get back to work, the more tax money the govt. will have to pay for the poor.

That is a logical argument, but the reality is that the mayor realized that by doing the bigwigs a favor, he might get some favors in return after he is booted out of office. Plus, there may have been out right bribery which is the other thing New Orleans is famous for.

there were reports the hotel was cleared with priority to make room for police, firefighters and other officials.

Sounds to me like there is a good reason. They have to provide a base of operations for the police and other responders.

I'd heard yesterday that this was done by order of Mayor Nagin. True? Does anyone know?

One can argue it either way. There is no perfect answer. They were tourists - i.e. guests. any cultures and religions have certain protocols when it comes to guests - they come first. And then there is the argument that tourists and especially foreign tourists are especially vulnerable in a foreign environment. And then there is the issue of international relations - the last thing we need now is more negativity from the world press in a series of headlines reading "Americans abandon foreign guests". I would not have thrown the tourists to the wolves. It's best to remove them from the equation entirely and get them home - at least they have a place to go home to . I cannot fault the decision.

If any of the people who were guests gave up their seats to the wretched refuse, they were heroes and should be applauded. If any of them didn't, well, they paid for the privledge, and it was the Hyatt's choice to take care of their customers.

I wonder if any of the self-rightous croakers who are flogging this story have ever been on a luxury vacation down in "the islands"? Rich Americans in the tourist quarter, sipping boat drinks...how often do THEY walk a few blocks to do the laundry of the poor working island mothers?

This is about one thing...political milage.

There has been much finger pointing about what society could do for certain people in this case. My question is how much food, water and or transportation Did the NAACP, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton send and when did it get there. There is a old saying God helps those that help themselves. Maybe SOCIETY should stand back and match their efforts at some ratio.

The hotels have been trying to get transport for their guests for days. Whenever they would have a bus come for the hotel guests, the government would commandeer it for the evacuation.

Many are also missing another obvious reason to get the tourists out. Most need no further government services. Get them to an airport and they go home or elsewhere.

I don't think you can.

Sure I can.

They were caucasian tourists.

With the anarchy caused by the dope addicts taking over the city (Mayor's own words)he made a calculated decision to get them out of danger so he wouldn't have to defend his failed welfare state.
