MAYOR CRITICIZED EVEN BEFORE LEVY BREAK. National Hurricane Center Director had to call Nagin at home Saturday night to plead: "Get people out of New Orleans." "The criticisms of Nagin came from above as well. Numerous officials urged him to evacuate the city, but he worried about the legality of ordering people out when New Orleans has few safe hurricane shelters. Also, National Hurricane Center Director Max Mayfield in Miami called Nagin at home Saturday night and told him: Get people out of New Orleans.

''I could never sleep if I felt like I didn't do everything that I could to impress upon people the gravity of the situation,'' Mayfield said. ``New Orleans is never going to be the same.''

When a grim Nagin issued the mandatory evacuation order Sunday, he said: ``We are facing a storm that most of us have feared . . . God bless us.''

Okay so the levee wasn't built to take the storm. Is that the issue here? But what about afterwards? Alabama's governor says he got all the help he asked for and that Fema was very helpful. Guess what party he belongs to?

Who said aid was slowed because the Governor didn't request it in the official way?

Who then turned away dozens of volunteers out of the bayou that arrived in droves with jon boats and supplies the day after the hurricane.

When Mayor Daly of Chicago offered to send a caravan of Fire and rescue brigades, who told them they weren't needed and accepted only one?

Who told the Red Cross they could not go into New Orleans because it wasn't safe?

Who refused to allow people in the Superdome to "walk out" of a situation with out water and facilities until yesterday?

When nurses from North Carolina volunteered at thier own expense to go assist in the decaying hospitals who told them, not until after 30 days of HAZMAT training?

Who told Houston that they could not accept refugees without a thorough security screening?

Who told the press that 30,000 troops had been deployed to Louisiana on Tuesday when in fact there were only 2,500 national guard troops there until early this morning and only 7,000 Guardsmen would be in the city by Saturday?

Who told the truck loads of bottled water, in Texas, ready to go on Monday morning, to wait until Thursday to drive in?

Who sent empty buses into where water and food were needed to pick up some of the many people who needed water and food?

Who told the staff at Charity hospital to take their patients onto the roof for evacuation, twice, and didn't show up either time?

With the hundreds of barges designed for transport and available to be commandeered to transport supplies to and people from the steps of the convention center, who commandeered ANYTHING to help?

Who declared that the Navy hospital ship had set sail yesterday when in fact it is still in Norfolk?

Why did the director of FEMA state on CNN that he had been unaware that there were several thousand people at the convention center in New Orleans, when we had been watching it on the news since the day before?

A dozen or so potshots have been taken at whomever. Is that a huge surprise for a city that in good times was having murders committed everyday? Were peolpe allowed to go in then? Now a dozen crack heads with a pistol can paralyze the US Government?

The answer is, the retirement home for incompetent republican administrators called the office of Homeland Security. They succesfully stopped every private effort, small scale and large, to evacuate feed and water the people of the Louisiana delta for two days because they were "in charge of coordinating the agencies with command and control as designed for such a disaster"

If my house is on fire, I don't want to be required to go to firefighting school, then get security clearance, make an acceptable official declaration of "house on fire", and wait for the President to fly in and agree it's on fire, before I can throw a cup of water on it.

You want Homeland Security? Get rid of those clueless idiots and give that job back to the National Guard and the Coast Guard, the agencies created with the experience to handle these disasters and get rid of this ridiculously ineffective agency and it's interference with common sense.

I guess its probably just me as a retrospective 20/20 hindsight - Monday morning quarterbacking armchair general that LA got sprung on them a double-secret super-dooper Hurricane Pam excercise that nobody knew was coming, left them absolutely flat-footed, and absolutely were left out in the cold due to George Bush's heartless capriciousness.

However, based on the results and outcome of this excercise, whatever these people had previously explored wasn't of any practical value whatsoever (that and two nickles would get you a dime).

I'm sure that's just me. But I guess that probably in great part is a result of not being a raving nutjob moonbat rabidly frothing at the maw, so I don't know what to tell you and all that.

I'm no fan of the mayor. In fact, he's a disgrace.

But lest anyone has forgotten, the FIRST official hurricane WARNING wasn't even issued until late Saturday evening, August 27. Earlier in the day, there were hurricane watches issued, but by Saturday evening it was becoming apparent that New Orleans would probably be facing a direct hit from a Cat 4 or 5 storm.

Heck, on Thursday the 25th, Katrina was only a Category 1 hurricane that was moving west out the Florida Keys. It did not turn north and grow larger until later. No one could have predicted on Thursday where the hurricane would go.

Cars on Saturday clog Interstate 10, the main route out of New Orleans.
Not everyone has a means to evacuate the city though and, according to The Associated Press, at least 100,000 people may have to ride out the storm in town.
Mayor Nagin has said the Superdome might be used as a shelter for people unable to leave.

New Orleans finally got serious and ordered an evacuation, but far too late. There is no way everyone will be able to get out of the city in time, and they may be forced to take shelter in the Superdome, which is above sea level. If Katrina makes a direct hit on New Orleans as a Category 4 hurricane, the levees protecting the city will be breached, and New Orleans, which is 6 - 10 feet below sea level, will fill with water. On top of this 6 feet of water will come a 15 foot storm surge, and on top of that will be 20 foot waves, so the potential for high loss of life is great. Given the current track and intensity forecast, I'd put the odds of this at about 20%.

What power? The city is going to be a ghost town in a matter of days. It will be years before it's inhabitable again.

The reason Bush agreed to 100% financing instead of the usual 75% to 25% funding is because with that meager 25%, it allowed the city to be in charge of letting contracts.
