Schools in Orleans Parish (New Orleans) are 93% Black according to the statistics I've seen. I don't say that things are any better in the North. It looks like a standard figure for public schools in big cities -- nothing to brag about.
In any event the idea that Black New Orleans residents moving North are going to encounter "real racism" for the first time is a foolish one.

No offense, but most of these people will not be able to support themselves in Texas unless they are gainfully employed.
Plus, if they are living under the poverty level, I will venture a guess and say they will not be in the best area!
On the other hand, for people who are willing to take responsibility for themselves, it may be a blessing for them in the long run.
Employers here in the Memphis area are giving people jobs and are helping in an enormous way. If we all band together and help, the results will be amazing. Yes it is possible to find a better life after the storm.
You are right but those are a lot of 'ifs'. Many people, especially ones who have lived a life on government assistance, are not up to the task.
I beg to differ. Notice I mentioned that it's all in the way someone thinks? If the evacuees think positive, there is nothing they can't acheive. I've already seen people who are encouraged after dealing with the aftermath...they keep going. You have to, otherwise you will not make it. And other Americans are sure helping.

It is interesting that you say the changing deographics of migration will hurt Dems. I was talking with someone this morning who thinks Dems will encourage migration to states where Republicans won by only slim margins, and try to move them into the blue column. Of course, none of us knows how the life changing upheaval will affect voting patterns. We may see some political conversions!
