Judge Roberts, who was once a law clerk for Chief Justice Rehnquist, has now been selected by the president to succeed Mr. Rehnquist as chief justice of the United States. Confirmation hearings for Judge Roberts will likely begin next week.

Justice O'Connor looks pretty upset. They were indeed great long time friends. Very rare.

I've always wondered if bebins are related to beebers, and if so are they stuned in the same manner?

They were 1 and 3 in the Stanford Law Class of 1952 right? I wonder who Number 2 was and how they feel about not making it to the Supreme Court.

i think it was James Rosen from Fox that interviewed her once and brought up the fact that they once DATED. Making a little joke, he asked something like was he a judicial ACTIVIST on the date or did he exercise judicial RESTRAINT. she kind of huffed a bit and said something like he had been a perfect gentleman.

Actually it is conceded by all of the members of the 1952 class that Rehnquist was #1 in the class of 102. O'Connor is alleged to have been #3 but there are apparently 99 students who have laid claim to the #2 slot.

That would mean that O'Connor finished last.

I don't know about Rehnquist, he was a very private person. But either Barry Goldwater or Ronald Reagan would very likely have enjoyed the quips, on their own threads.

Souter's probably packing up his belongings since the town might take his farm through eminent domain. Hehehehehe. But he should have gone back to DC for the funeral. His absence is shameful.

As I've said elsewhere, Souter's sitting on his front porch with a shotgun in case anyone tries to "eminent domain" his property.

Slightly more seriously....

Maybe Souter just doesn't want to deal with all the people who would look at the coffin, then turn and look at him, and shake their heads.

Souter must have had some serious issues with Rehnquist. In the last day or so, all of the other Associate Justices released statements about the passing of The Chief. Souter did not.

Now he stays away from this. And he probably won't be at the funeral tomorrow.

It would be interesting to know what the other Justices think of Souter's total lack of class, and will it affect their future relations?

(But NOT to delay the confirmation hearings of Justice Roberts, mind you...) </s>
