As someone who has written and developed disaster plans I can tell you that the question of drivers should have been contemplated in advance. I mean come on, we are talking about a risk that this community has known for decades, this is not rocket science. And where do they go? Out of the path of the hurricane would have been a good start.

No way Nagin, Blanco, whoever, would have authorized a plan calling for just anyone to drive the busses.
The bus drivers, if local, would have fled with their own families. They have no law enforcement duty.
It's called planning. Simply implementing the pre-existing emergency evacuation plan would have gotten the buses running. The mayor was simply incompetent. Never attribute to malice that which can be explained by incompetence.
I know this is a change of subject.. but I have to ask. Why does everyone coming into NO have a police escort or guards? Do you all find it strange that looters would shoot at contractors coming into the city?
Hey, here's a great suggestion, you come up with a plan who will drive the buses in case of an emergency! You're Unbelievable! 800,000 people live in New Orleans and they can't get a lousy 2000 bus drivers from local, state or national guard in case of emergency?

I heard that it was Halliburton employees who did this dastardly deed, at the direction of 'you know who' an un-named high ranking Bush administration official. All to get the contract to clean up New Orleans? Howie Dean must be working overtime on this one????
1. If buses were available it would not have been hard to get someone to drive them.
2. Where would they go? Higher ground ! Do not think it would have been hard to spot a group of buses.
