We were awakened this morning by news out of New Orleans, five days after the devastating hurricane passed through the city, that the city is still plunged in darkness and most of it is remains flooded. But, that wasn't any different from the day before. What was different was the news that police officers are walking off the job, gunshots are common throughout the city and fires are beginning to erupt at various locations. Gangs of 7-10 men, both armed and unarmed, are roaming the city killing and stealing, some out of pure instinct to survive, some to take advantage of the situation. This is happening in a city that had advance notice of an impending disaster and 80% left for safety. The other 20% are now trying to survive.
In California a major earthquake would make the scope and scale of what happened in New Orleans seem like a minor incident. There obviously would be no warnings, and the area devastated would be at least 10 times that of New Orleans affecting as many as 10 million people or more.
The lessons learned from New Orleans are:
1. Keep enough food and water to last for a minimum of one month.
2. Keep a lot of flashlights and batteries around along with a couple of portable radios. Keep a well stock first aid kit as well. Keep a portable stove for cooking and boiling water.
3. Own guns and plenty of ammunition. Know how to use them and that includes everyone in your family old enough to handle a firearm.
4. Be prepared to use your firearms in defense of your life and the lives of your family members and neighbors.
5. Share what you can with your neighbors and form a neighborhood security team to keep unwanted people out until government authorities have secured the area.
6. When politicians tell you that only law enforcement and police should own guns in today's "modern society", tell them to go to hell... or New Orleans. There's no difference between either at this point in time.

I always urge people to do what I do, any time I empty a plastic container, be it OJ, or Gatorade, or whatever, I rinse it and fill it with water. And lots of times you can find at the supermarket, Mac and Cheese, or those dried Fettucine type meals pretty cheap, stock up on enough to last two weeks or so in a plastic bin.
It was weird, because a few years back, I got the unpleasant feeling that I should start stocking up on stuff... I kid you not... one week before 9/11.

Buying a gun is just the beginning, though. You have to learn how to use it, clean it, and store it.

In 2000, I read the three most likely disasters in the new millennium would be a terrorist attack in NYC, a huge flood in NO, and a catastrophic earthquake in SF. Local authorities should definitely lead preparation efforts in SF and LA.
There's so much fun stuff going on in CA, that I'm not at all familiar with LA. Of course everyone knows that most of the politicians out there are corrupt.
I am surprised at the residents, though. Many got out while there was still time, but what about the rest? Is it distrust of government and fellow citizens? I don't want to generalize here, but some of the poorer folks are just not educated to be self reliant. Were these warnings broadcast on the local radio stations? I doubt they watch the Weather Channel on cable tv.
I don't think the residents themselves blame President Bush. OTOH, they could be made to blame him, with the usual disinformation. How much do they know about hierarchy and protocol between local, state, and Federal government? I didn't know as much as I do now, but the local government and the state failed these people. I don't think the poor can grasp the concept that ultimately you are responsible for you and your loved ones.
Which brings up something I forgot about. TV stations had PSA's telling residents that they would be cited if they left their pets behind. But, the shelters won't take pets. Ugh, what a mess : (

Saw an interview on 'A Current Affair' last night. There were showing a family checking out their home after they evacuated. They were upset and then very distraught. It was just about a total loss due to flooding. The mother of three then vented and basically stated that they have been spending money on the levee's for years. She stated basically that the money was pilfered by the corrupt politicians within Louisiana. That was from an actual resident. They know their situation better then the rest of the country.
Concerning California, after having lived in Los Angeles for both the LA Riots and the Northridge earthquake, I would take an earthquake anytime. Very little looting reported after the quake, but that was not the Big One. Power was restored quickly. It could easily get much worse though in an 8.0 on the San Andreas. If power is out for more then a couple of days, looting and riots will probably break out. Somehow though I don't think we will see Arnold Flying over Los Angeles, while crying into the camera for Stephanopolus. He performed very good during that nasty fire season we had. Visited with quite a few of the fireman.
I think the more educated residents of NO, know exactly how corrupt their politicians are. I'm worried about the folks who either don't know, or know and don't care.
The L.A. riots were insane. MSM showed edited video of Rodney King being subdued. We happened to catch it live. That guy was f*ckered up. I believe later it was learned that he was high on PCP. JJ had to show up and fan the flames. Do you remember the Korean business owners up on their roofs with assault rifles? That's what you have to do.
That's what businesses and citizens need to remember in times of crisis. An earthquake may destroy your home, but you won't have to swim through toxic waste, either. The last Northridge quake was the worst one I can recall. The only thing citizens can do is try and store enough provisions, just in case. Due to space, sometimes that isn't possible. I'm sitting on the fence, regarding Ahhhhnold, but I know he wouldn't fold in the event of an emergency. In fact, I'll be he's been reviewing disaster preparedness plans for every region of CA. Every governor should make sure that each mayor of each city, has a plan and knows the protocol. Starting with Villagairosa.
If stuff happens, it would be a good idea to stash at least one firearm and a bunch of ammo for it in a good hiding place, in case the "authorities" decide to start confiscating guns to "maintain the peace"
