Born on this Day
1950 author Peggy Noonan
Noonan served as a speechwriter for U.S. presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush. She coined the phrase "a kinder, gentler nation" and also popularized H.G. Well's "a thousand points of light," two memorable catchphrases used by Bush. However she also was the one who pushed for Bush to pledge "Read my lips: no new taxes" in his 1988 acceptance speech.

When desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. James 1:15
Eve explained the rules to the tempter. She and Adam could eat the fruit of any tree in the Garden of Eden, except for the special one in the middle. Just touching it, she said, would bring death.
I can imagine Satan throwing back his head and with mocking laughter saying, "You will not surely die" (Genesis 3:4). He then suggested that God was holding back something good from her (v.5).
For thousands of years the enemy has repeated that strategy. He doesn't care if you believe in the authority of the Bible, as long as he can get you to disbelieve that the one thing standing between you and God is sin.
"You will not surely die," we are told. That is the theme of so many modern novels. The hero and heroine live in disobedience to God but suffer no consequences. In TV shows and movies the characters rebel against the moral laws of God but live happily ever after.
There is even a perfume called "My Sin." It's a fragrance "so alluring, so charming, so exciting," the ads tell us, "we could only call it 'My Sin.'" You would never guess that sin is a stench in the nostrils of God.
In the temptations you face, will you believe Satan's lie? Or will you obey God's warning? Haddon Robinson
Personal Reflection
How has sin damaged the lives of people I know?
How has disobedience to God harmed me?
Have I experienced God's forgiveness? (1 John 1:9-10).
One bite of sin leaves a bitter aftertaste.

Our Great Old Soldiers The old soldiers sit on an old wooden bench just outside the post office door. They each have their memories of days long gone by when they served and they fought in their war. They brag of their battles, their fights, and their skirmishes, talk of fine medals they've worn. Each with his tales tries to outdo the other with all he has done, and what for. There's Harry, who fought in the Second World War, then worked thirty years at the mill. At night he does battle with demons so evil, can't sleep, lies awake hurting still. There's James, in Korea's where he served his time, lost part of one leg to the cold. Carries a bag with a bottle inside it, the park cross the street is his home. There's Joe who flew off to a land called Vietnam, fought commies to protect mankind. In nightmares and flashbacks he relives each moment and grieves for the men left behind. And Amos, he fought in a place called Kuwait, his battle much shorter and cleaner, but the chemicals there that he breathed in the air slowly now take their toll day by day. Old Glory waves o'er the post office door in thanks to these men proud and brave. As the old soldiers sit on the old wooden bench, few know the true price that they paid. ~ By, Karen Briggs ~

GARTH BROOKS LYRICS
"Cowboy Bill"
He told a good story and all of us kids listened
'Bout his life on the border and the way it was then
And we all believed him and when he would finish
We'd ask the old cowboy to tell 'em again
You could almost hear those prairie winds blowin'
His saddle a creakin' 'neath his old faded jeans
You could taste the dry dust from the trail he was ridin'
As he sat there and painted those west Texas scenes
And the grown-ups would tell us
You boys keep your distance, that old man's just tellin' you lies
But to all of us kids Cowboy Bill was a hero
Just as true as his blue Texas skies
He told of a time when he rode with the Rangers
Down on the pecos and he saved the day
Outnumbered by plenty, they were almost too cover
With thirty banditos headed their way
He looked back just in time to see a horse stumble
The captain went down and Bill pulled up on his rains
And through a flurry of bullets he rescued the captain
And they rode for a sunset, just the story remains
And the grown-ups would tell us
You boys keep your distance, that old man's just tellin' you lies
But to all of us kids Cowboy Bill was a hero
Just as true as his blue Texas skies
Well I still remember the day that it happened
We waited and we waited but Bill never showed
And the folks at the feed store said they hadn't seen him
So we set out for his place down Old Grist Mill Road
And we cried when we found him lying there with his mem'ries
The old trunk wide open, things scattered about
He was clutchin' a badge that said Texas Ranger
And an old "yeller" letter said Texas Is Proud
And the grown-ups that told us
You boys keep your distance, that old man's just tellin' lies
Well now they're all sayin' Cowboy Bill was a hero
Just as true as his blue Texas skies
Just as true as his blue Texas skies
