Assembly passes same-sex marriage bill
Sfgate ^

Posted on 09/06/2005 8:21:03 PM PDT by America First Libertarian

A landmark bill to legalize gay marriage passed the Assembly by a single vote Tuesday and now goes to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has not said whether he will sign it.

The measure passed on a 41-to-35 votes, with no support from Republicans. The author of the bill, Assemblyman Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, worked desperately throughout the day to find the votes needed for passage.

The Senate approved AB849 last week, marking the first time a legislative body in the country to approve a bill legalizing same-sex marriage. But supporters had a harder time mustering support in the Assembly, where the bill had already failed once this year, falling four votes short.

Meanwhile, half a country away, people worked desperately throughout the day to find the living among the wreckage. Around the nation, people displaced worked desperately to find homes and jobs.

I'd love to put this on the air in a couple months.

If Schwarzenegger has three brain cells to rub together, he will veto this the right way, reversing his drastic collapse in public polls and paving the way to some chance of success in this fall's referenda and next year's election.

They disregarded the will of the people of California in a State wide referendum. The dumocrats pay no attention to what the people wan't. They just go ahead and play the game of dictators, and will find a willing court to back them up. And the slippery slope continues.

It failed once and passed by one vote this time.

He should've announced that he'd veto it the first time it was brought up, especially if the voters rejected it in a statewide referendum.

America is not a democracy, 80%-90% opposed interracial marriage 45 years ago, and 35% still do, it was decided by the legislatures (coincidently this is something the opposition was complaining about, then when it happens it has to be done by the people, not everything deserves to be an initiative.

This is a state issue, if the voters of california disagree, the democrats will have to answer to them, and will be run out of office.

Good point. I can't for the life of me figure out why this is such a pressing issue. I mean really, are gays that powerful in California? Anyway, I guess those voting for this bill feel they're doing the right thing regardless of the political peril. There's a phrase for that but it escapes me... oh ya, I got it I think... is it... personal courage?

I make no bones about being a lover of liberty and supporting gay marriage, as long as religious institutions aren't forced to perform or recognize them, it is a win-win situation. I care about Americans, and race, religion, income, sexual orientation etc, mean nothing to me. As long as one does not initiate force or transgression against another citizen, I could note care any less what they do or how they live.

I have children, and I instill in them a sense of tolerance, and a love for liberty. They aren't being fed an agenda, I do what so many parents seem to be unwilling to do--Parent. Another example is the fact I have cable, and many violent movies, but they know what they are allowed to watch, and what they are not allowed to, I don't need any liberal or conservative to parent my child, I take care of that.

I've instilled that same sense in my kids AND grandson...but once they're out of your sight, away from YOUR influence, ie a classroom....ALL that you've taught them can VERY WELL be shoved aside.

And you won't be able to do squat.

It may be that you don't care about this issue, but someday, something equally disgusting to you WILL happen.

The gay lifestyle is unnatural, men have a shorter lifespan, and there is NOTHING that they can't do now that this stupid bill passing will accomplish. Think about it.

I'm NOT angry with you, not at all. Please don't read it that way. You're just wrong. That's all.

I'm a Gramma and carry far more "weight" than you do. Ha! ;)

You sure offer some food for thought.

I have a gut feeling that the Mexicans may end up not fully appreciating the Euro-style secular socialism, the belittlement of the traditional family unit, and the amoral free-for-all that the Democrats are foisting on California (and WANT to foist on the entire nation).

When the time comes that the productive white middle class has mostly vacated California and the place is 70% Mexican, there could well be a sea change in California politics. Heck, the Mexicans may end up being more "Republican" than today's California "Republicans" are. Like the Cubans in Florida.

I suppose you are also a 'lover' of NAMBLA, bestiality, adultery, and other various sexual unions that are contrary to what is normally accepted in society.
Don't kid yourself. A society that turns its back on 'right and wrong' and builds its foundation on shifting sands will not stand.

Indeed at this point I am only a father. Once my children are adults and on thier own (they are allowed to live with me as long as they wish) then it is their life to live. I am giving them the essentials, and they have to be freethinkers. I don't want robots for children, they will find their own way, and may even reject the values of liberty, as adults it is their decision.

Thier is no scientific evidence to prove gay men have a shorter lifespan because they are gay. Cameron's study has been widely discredited. And not all gay men are rabid and sex crazed. I know many gays, not of them are effeminate, a few have children, gay is just one aspect of their life.

Their is a sociological aspect to problems in the gay community, sadly the sucide rate amongst teens, due to their parents disowning them, and society telling them they are unnatural, sick, sinners, or flawed because of who they natually are. I'm not about that, I am about liberty, and unity amongst Americans.

They legislature is largely made up of lackeys for the leftist ideologues that are concentrated in many parts of the state and voting for this atrocity will get them big dollars from their political paymasters. Those dollars will assure their reelection and continued power.

If they had an once of decency they'd put this up for a statewide referendum, but of course they good never get the people to pass it in a statewide vote. The little rats are secure in their districts though if they can get enough cash.

I consider myself a political refugee from California and I've come to look on those Democrat politicos much the way refugees from Communist countries look upon their ex-commissars.

They're a bunch of vampires, bleeding that state dry of wealth, decency, and freedom.

Beastiality, I reject it because an animal is not human.
Adultry is none of my business.
You have offered no example that wasn't offered years ago in the interracial marriage debate, remember it was illegal for centuries.

sex with prepubescents, animals and adultury have nothing to do with two adults entering into a contract.

Don't forget polygamy and arranged marriage was once a norm, do you support polygamy and arranged marriages?

Right. You probably already know the stats: Average life span for a married man ~75 yrs, for a divorced man 59 yrs, and for a gay man (WITHOUT AIDS) is 42 yrs. If he has AIDS, it is 40 yrs.

If there was an illness that caused women to have a shortened life span of 42 yrs, there would be mandatory postage stamps by all govt offices to "stamp" it all. We'd never hear the end of it. But since it involves Gay men, the liberals don't seem to care that they die young. I have yet to hear a liberal say they would like a gay person to go straight so they could live longer.
