Va is ready for 3000 I think. They want to house them in some church camps.
I say we send anyone back to NO who wants to go so they can rebuild the city.
And you are right...the housing they are offering (for families) is very nice.
New arrivals might enjoy the Steeler season...but I would guess that anyone used to living in LA would hate a Pittsburgh winter.
Isn't there a message in here somewhere about looking a gift horse in the mouth, beggars can't be choosers, etc? My hubby has been talking about relocating to a different part of the country for a new/better job. Hmmm, if it is ok for us, why not them? Oh wait, my hubby wants to work and move up a tax bracket. By the way, my family would go nuts if we moved somewhere, it would be a tough decision, but we would be making one in hopes of bettering ourselves. Sound famiiar?
New Orleans is not like the rest of the country. It is very unique. They just want to return to that life. I'm guessing they are perfectly content to wait while someone supports them until they can return.
I don't think they really give a "chit" where they live as long as we keep handing out food stamps and checks and building them new homes while poor BUT WORKING taxpayers live in old trailers and apartments. I say give them all one month to grow the hell up and get a job. QUIT making it so damn easy on people who obviously DO NOT appreciate it and still complain. I am sick of paying taxes so that they can set home and complain when they don't get thier way fast enough to suit them.
Nothing like the site of pump-jacks and tumbleweeds to get you back to the "Big Muddy".
Careful about saying that - Barbra Bush said as much and has been taking a beating in the press!
The taxpayers of the state will pick up the tab. FEMA still owes Houston and Harris County millions from the 2001 storm. We're not likely to see funds from Katrina any time soon.
FEMA contracted with Carnival Cruise Lines to house 4,000 or more evacuees on their ships docked at Galveston because they could not dock at their home port in New Orleans. None of the evacuees in Houston wanted to stay on luxury cruise liners! They all said they had seen enough water and simply wanted to get on with the process of putting their lives back together.
Am in Pgh too. The company I work for is booming and hurting for production workers to keep up with huge sales numbers.It is willing to help anyone relocate permanently. Don't think we've had any takers yet.
Gee, I think Utah is a great state, beautiful scenery and friendly people. Anyone choosing to return to NO is certainly passing up a chance for a better life, unless they are one of the wealthy families of NO.
Don't dump them in Virginia. We have enough welfare lazy people we are already supporting with our taxes. It is NOT fair to put them in any state and not MAKE them get jobs right away (there are jobs for those who WANT them) and expect us to CONTINUE to take care of them and others. Enough money is being donated to take care of them until they can go back. People like Bill Gates and other multi-billionaires could do away with all of this and they wouldn't even feel it financially. Instead, we average income people are going to bare the brundt of it and believe me, WE FEEL IT already at the gas pumps.
Governor Romney would've gotten his compassion points for the offer, and the evacuees would've been holed up in abandoned military housing on the Cape. You think the fine people of Duxbury etal would've let them anywhere near their towns?
And, yeah the Cape is cold and miserable in the winter, without any of the cultural richness of NO.
Mat 25:32 And all nations shall be gathered before Him. And He shall separate them from one another, as a shepherd divides the sheep from the goats.
Mat 25:33 And indeed He shall set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats off the left.
Mat 25:34 Then the King shall say to those on His right hand, Come, blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
Mat 25:35 For I was hungry, and you gave me food; I was thirsty, and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger, and you took Me in;
Mat 25:36 I was naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.
Mat 25:37 Then the righteous shall answer Him, saying, Lord, when did we see You hungry, and fed You? Or thirsty, and gave You drink?
Mat 25:38 When did we see You a stranger, and took You in? Or naked, and clothed You?
Mat 25:39 Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and came to You?
Mat 25:40 And the King shall answer and say to them, Truly I say to you, Inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brothers, you have done it to Me.
Mat 25:41 Then He also shall say to those on the left hand, Depart from Me, you cursed, into everlasting fire prepared for the Devil and his angels.
Mat 25:42 For I was hungry, and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty, and you gave Me no drink;
Mat 25:43 I was a stranger and you did not take Me in; I was naked, and you did not clothe Me; I was sick, and in prison, and you did not visit me.
Mat 25:44 Then they will also answer Him, saying, Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister to You?
Mat 25:45 Then He shall answer them, saying, Truly I say to you, Inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.
Mat 25:46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into everlasting life.
Not quite sure what your point is, but I am entitled to my opinion on this matter just as you are. Thank you for letting us know your take on it.
Gov Huntsman of Utah has been assured that 100% of the bill will be picked up by the government. Just reporting what I read.
I can see where you're coming from. The commitment is there from a whole bunch of Utahns to help anyone out in need. I was offended by the survivors who got off the NG helicopter when they found it was going to Utah. "There's nothing to do there." Um, I thought this was a time of disaster, not to gripe about the lack of partying in Utah.
I would choose Utah, it's a beutiful state. Been through there several times on my way back & forth to Wyoming. The people there are extremely friendly.
I imagine the ones that stay in Texas will further drain the welfare money that the illegals live on. Houston, San Antonio and Dallas will become bigger pits of crime than they are now. There will be fighting between the two just like they did in California, for funds and turf.
I wonder why so many in the media are blabbing about NO not being helped because they are predominantly black? I heard this morning on Fox a St Bernard Parish resident say that parish is 90% white and they got no help whatsoever until now and it's just trickling in.
Utah is a beautiful and unique state.
I read an article in the WSJ that the only parish in New Orleans that is predominantly black is the New Orleans parish. The other parishes have a white majority.
