Gov. Vows to Veto Driver's License Bill
LA Times ^ | 9/9/05 | By Robert Salladay and Jennifer Delson, Times Staff Writers

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will veto legislation approved Thursday to create a separate driver's license for illegal immigrants in California, a top aide said only hours after the bill passed the state Senate.

The upper house sent the controversial bill to Schwarzenegger on a 21-15 vote, the minimum needed for passage, only to have the governor's office say he would reject it. It would be the second time in two years that Schwarzenegger has rejected Democratic legislation allowing licenses for illegal immigrants

Richard Costigan, the governor's legislative secretary, said the bill was premature because the federal government was still writing regulations on how states should, if they desire, provide driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

"We will be vetoing the driver's license bill," Costigan said Thursday evening.

Even some supporters were uneasy about the newest bill, SB 60, because it creates a second-tier license some considered separate and unequal for those who cannot prove citizenship or legal residency. It requires a unique design and color. The card could be used only for driving, but not for opening a bank account, boarding an airplane or any other official purpose.

The failure to close the issue of providing driver's licenses to illegal immigrants — a practice California stopped a dozen years ago — means another round of negotiations with Schwarzenegger, Republicans, Democratic leaders, border activists and immigration advocates over the complex and emotional issue.

I love the name by the way. I was born in San Antonio 1972. But anyway could we get a license in Europe? No Mexico. No. I swear we need another Revolution... Just a thought.

Him vowing to veto this and that gay "marriage" bill, to me, prove even a RINO is better than a democrat.

I told everyone he would too, moderates are pragmatic. I can give you a million reasons why "better than a Democrat" is not always true but don't have the time this morning. Maybe BlackElk who has a similar outlook as I do would offer a comment or two. I might even let the ever thoughtful sierrawasp loose on this one.

Ok. I'm against legitimizing illegals, but this seems to have some good stuff in it.

It actually DOES make them less than legal, puts tabs on them and only lets them drive.

They *do* become 2d-tier immigrants with this. I'm surprised it passed the legislature.

Good for Arnold. Illegal aliens should not even be in this country, much less given licenses. They should be deported and under no condition should they be allowed to own real estate.

I'm surprised it passed the legislature

The gay "marriage" bill and the illegal alien license bills are straight out of the Dem playbook for the last 60 years. Even Dems who would not normally vote for these bills voted yes because the intent is to get Schwarzenegger to veto the bill, so that they can make it a campaign issue in his re-election.

The timing and the controversy around the bills is no accident. Recall that right after the recall, they rescinded the illegal alien DL bill that Davis had signed. That's because they were terrified of losing seats over it; they had miscalibrated the opposition to it.

But not now. They now think that Arnold is on the ropes, and that the original opposition to the bill was more about Davis then the content of the bill.

Arnold is doing the right thing for himself by vetoing the bills. Now we will see if his people have the political smarts to pull out all the stops and castigate the legislature for passing the bills. If they don't, the Dems will try to hang it around his neck as proof that he's just a big meanie, the usual rap from that gang of thugs.

Great news! Thanks Arnold. Geez, I just logged on a short while ago and many great news items tonight.

I guess I'll log off and have sweet dreams tonight instead of nightmares.
