No surprise. He probably does not know that men could get a deferment from the draft in exchange for taking jobs as teachers in areas where there was a critical shortage. I had friends who did this. No wonder his teachers were all "anti-war." They were draft dodgers trying to hide their personal cowardice with political figleaves. But then, that is the Left in a nutshell.
His "Leftist House of Mirrors" is still falling. He has made a great deal of progress but he is still having a hard time acknowledging a largely wasted part of his life. He still seems to harbor an old, and apparently hard to stifle bogeyman of the left, an irrational fear of the religious: "I will remain an ever-hostile foe of all fundamentalisms, especially religious ones,"

Don't take any of the doubting-Thomases too seriously, Michael. A good 50% of the people on FR who self-identify as conservative are actually staunchly moderate. And of the remainder, 50% are Republicans before they are conservatives. 100% are absolutely convinced they have the lock on the definition of conservatism.
Anyone moving to the right from the left is moving in the proper direction. Your credentials are based on empirical observation and the rare perspective of actually having been in the belly of the beast. I say again, welcome back!
