Flight 93 victims honored with Muslim Crescent?

A Pennsylvania pastor is fighting the newly approved design of the Flight 93 National Memorial, contending its crescent pattern is a symbol of Islam.

Rev. Ron McRae, head of the Bible Anabaptist Church near Jerome, Pa., about 55 miles from Pittsburgh, said a private group he formed might go to court to block the "Crescent of Embrace" memorial designed by Paul Murdoch Associates of Los Angeles.

"This is a memorial to the terrorists who killed those people, not a memorial to the folks who died there innocently," McRae told the Tribune-Democrat newspaper in Johnstown, Pa.

McRae of Conemaugh Township, Pa., is director and founder of the Lancaster-based Street Preachers Fellowship.

The heart of the memorial is a mile-long semicircle of red maples surrounding the place near Shanksville, Pa, where the flight's 40 passengers and crew were killed when the hijacked plane plunged into the ground Sept. 11, 2001.

The designer maintains he used the term crescent only in the architectural sense of a curved line.

"This is not about any religion per se," Murdoch told the Tribune-Democrat. "It's a spiritual space, and a sacred place, but it's open to anyone."

But McRae vows to fight it.

"They wouldn't dare put up the Ten Commandments or the cross of Christ, but they're going to put up a red crescent," he said. "We're not going to stand idly by and allow this to happen."

Several weblogs raised similar concerns about the design.

Charles Johnson at Little Green Footballs asked: "Is this a coincidence, an example of amazing cluelessness, or something more deliberate?"

Ed Morrissey at Captain's Quarters said, "Can you imagine the outcry from the multiculturalists and the ACLU had the design incorporated a cross or a Star of David in honor of the victims? Why should we tolerate the Crescent that, inadvertently or deliberately, honors the terrorists?

This is just not the right place to put a crescent.

The design of the memorial looks more like a monument to the murderers than to the victims.

Hitler had a monument of larches grown in the shape of of a swastika..in order that it could be seen plainly from the air..

Not analogous. The Germans making a holocaust monument in the shape of a swastika and calling it "Swastika of Embrace" would be analogous though.

THIS IS NOT A MISTAKE

THIS IS 100% INTENTIONAL

Years ago, on Boston's Southeast Expressway, a natural gas tank was repainted with a modernistic set of irregular stripes. Some claimed that the leftmost stripe (the dark red one, if I recall correctly) bore a striking resemblance to a profile of Ho Chi Minh.

It would be interesting to look further into the background of the artist who thought this up. This in a day when the NCAA has seen fit to examine all sports team names for PC implications.

Islamonazis don't care what is built there. So long as the ground is marked in some way so that they can build a mosque on this "holy site" once they dominate America.

For those who haven't seen what you are talking about...

I believe that it still remains.

Then move the crescent. Keep the memorial with the windchimes for each victim of that flight.

So every Autumn around mid-September it becomes a red crescent, and that's just a trivial accident?

I suppose having an aerial cross, or flag, or 93 was too simple an idea.

FL's motorcycle rights plate is three verticle stripes of red white and blue.

Any surprise if I tell you it was designed by a frenchman?

This was approved by committee, there is ZERO chance this was not intentional.

THIS IS 100% AN EFFORT TO SPIT AT THE USA AS A NATION.

Gah. My apologies for being a rude butthead.

My overreaction was uncalled for. I'm sorry.

Some people really need to get a life. So what do we do now ban Crescents?

Do we put swastika's on memorials for soldiers who have died in World War II? I don't think so. But would that be OK too?

As strange as this red crescent is as a design for this memorial, I think it is most likely accidental. Paul Murdoch Architects is a small firm with no obvious links to Islam and the design was approved by a board that consists of family members of those that died in flight 93.

That said, it is still one of the odd coincidences I can imagine. And it will probably be changed once the connection to Islam is pointed out to the families.

This pastor definitely has a good point. We all know how artists want to hide behind their creativity, while at the same time promoting their biases. Whether the artist did this or not, deliberately or without thinking, it needs to be changed. I'm sure the Islams are laughing in the streets about this one. Wow!

Apples and oranges.

So everything that has a cresent shape to it should be banned?

The fact is the vast majority of the world Muslims are not our enemies.

True enough, in fact we would not be able to prosecute the war against the terrorists without our Muslim Allies.

That said, those who executed the 9/11 attacks against the US did so under the banner if Islam. I believe that it is wrong to memorialize the victims of 9/11 with what looks for all the world like the symbol of their murderers.

The design needs to be changed.
