VICTORIA Police has donated hundreds of police uniforms to officers in hurricane-ravaged New Orleans.
Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon announced today that 25 boxes of trousers, boots, shirts and caps would be sent to the disaster-hit region of the United States.
Ms Nixon said she hoped that "receiving boxes of fresh, clean clothes would help lift the spirits of police officers".
"The delivery is only a small token but it is our way of letting them know communities across the world acknowledge their work and are eager to support them."
The donation follows a call for international aid, to help in the fitting out of personnel involved in the disaster relief effort.
The donated gear was taken from Victoria Police's stock of surplus and redundant gear, and all Victoria Police identification has been removed.
Oooooooookay.
Should have sent them to Las Vegas or Houston... You know, where the NOLA cops have been for awhile.

I had a funny caption to go with this picture of Ms Nixon... but I can't remember what it was. I've forgotten while looking for the picture.
Regardless, Ms Nixon isn't exactly regarded as the most cluey Commissioner, we've ever had - but in this case, she is responding to a specific request for clothing for emergency service workers. And some journalist probably asked her for a spur of the moment statement.

OK - now I wish I knew why this didn't show up in five refreshes, leaving me to think I must have not sent it.
She looks like a real sweety, bless 'er heart.
OK, fair enough. The remark seems a bit...chirpy...but the aid requested and received is far and away the important part. My thanks to Ms. Nixon and her constables.
Personally, I don't have a problem with homosexuality - but a Police Chief Commissioner shouldn't be marching in any political demonstration - and the Sydney Mardi Gras has that as one of its purposes.
I can tell by your outfit that you are a cowboy...
John ain't got that fixed yet.
Yeah, I criticise her whenever I think she deserves it and that's very often - but in this case, I do think she was probably just caught off guard.
Acknowledged. I find it very easy to believe that a reporter would go out of its way to make a public figure look like an ass.
I think somebody should send the good folks in New Orleans a MAYOR instead!
I thought they need weapons and ammo.
Well, I don't think we could help with that - our Police Force is carrying 50 year old Smith and Wesson revolvers, and can't get the commissioner or the government to agree there might be a reason to upgrade.
My thought was that when the Walmart's gun rack was raided and the local police force was under-gunned, guns and bullets might be a priority.
Since the National Guard were finally let into the city, to spell the local police force, I'm sure clean uniforms are greatly appreciated in a hazardous water environment.
Keep up the good fight.
Some of us appreciate our Brit and Aussie allies, even it you talk funny :)
I think it is a nice gesture.
Orange County Sheriffs Department in CA send a whole semi full of uniforms, bullet proof vests, shoes, utility belts, radios, you name it....
Havent heard if it ever got there.
