Please sign the online petition to stop the killing of pets in New Orleans. Conflicting reports abound, regarding whether orders have been given to shoot abandoned pets. But just in case it is or becomes true, please sign the online petitions below to STOP the killing:

And the following petition adds the words "and their pets" to the order to evacuate people from New Orleans. Please sign it also:

Thank you all in advance for signing these petitions. Thousands and thousands of pets are starving in New Orleans. People who have NOTHING left but their pets were forced to leave their pets when they were evacuated. Now those pets are trapped in sweltering houses with no food or water, or are chained up with no opportunity to scavenge for food or water, or are roaming the streets. My local news said packs of dogs are roaming the streets, killing smaller and weaker dogs, and eating them to survive (that information came from the Oregon Humane Society team that is performing search and rescue operations for animals in New Orleans).

Please sign the petitions. Thank you.

shooting them is the most humane thing that came be done.
They will just go to animal shelter and get euthanized anyways.
Save people, they are more important than animals.

For people with pets, they are providing animal cages for them now.

Let's start a petition to force world peace.

People can buy another dog, there's no shortage of them.

As sad as it is, several of these abandoned pets are very likely infected to disease from the waste water and from wild animals in the area. Euthanizing, by shot or shooting, just may be in the best interest of all.

The link discusses a returning disease, caught by dogs from racoons and passed to humans. It is from the Northwest, but if it can be passed here, it can be passed elsewhere.

I was talking to my husband about how cruel it seems to be shooting people's pets. He said that they have to now, that the dogs are running in packs and getting vicious, looking for food.

I don't know where these people think these dogs are going to go and get new homes. Don't they realize that a hurricane went through the area, NOBODY has a home, and NOBODY is going to adopt them?

Should we spend a grand flying them to another state just to have them euthanized for a final $100 fee.
Bullets are cheap, and done properly, instant. Diseased dogs that have began forming packs are not ideal pets.

Signed.

And just ignore the torrent of tired predictables who are sure to wade into this thread telling you a)it's not breaking news, b)the animals aren't worth saving, c)there's nothing wrong with shooting them, and d)some variation of the above. They're guaranteed to show up.

It's not a zero-sum game; there are plenty of volunteers who'll work to save these animals, thereby detracting nothing from the volunteers working to save people.

It is sad that these animals have to suffer and that they have been separated from their owners but in the big scheme of things saving those animals is a very low priority.

If people couldn't get their pets out, it's a sad thing but at this point we're likely getting into dangers of rabies, pack animal behavior and regression to decidedly non-domesticated behaviors and that's just the people (kidding, sort of).

When the people left the pets behind, they left them for dead.

There is no shortage of replacement companion animals when people return to the area.

"there are plenty of volunteers who'll work to save these animals, thereby detracting nothing from the volunteers working to save people."

Really? Where are they then? No ay should we pay a crew with a machine that costs 18 million dollars, thjousands an hour to run and maintain, be flying dogs and cats out, only to pile them up and euthanize them anyways.

Bullets are NOT cruel. If you want to save one, by all means, go and get one then, pay the vet fees that will be required, take it home and feel good about yourself.

Many of the dogs were used for protection by their owners. They were trained to only be controlled by their owners. These dogs are totally unapproachable, even if you wanted to just rescue them.

They are a huge danger to rescue workers. But, whenever all these volunteers that are willing to rescue these animals and care for them arrive, (must have had a flat tire along the way or something) they are welcome to try save that starving pittbull, shepard or Rottie chained up in somebodies yard.
