Political fallout from Hurricane Katrina From Mr J. R. Dunn
Sir, I disagree with Martin Samuels contention (Comment, September 6) that the breakdown of society witnessed in New Orleans could occur elsewhere in the US because of the economic apartheid inflicted on American cities. New Orleans is the most corrupt city in the most corrupt state in the Union, a situation with roots in its early status as a French colony and still uncorrected after two centuries. The state is run as a plantation with taxpayers as its cash crop.
The social results, in normal times, are abject poverty, rampant graft, lack of native industry and the slow, easygoing Mediterranean feel so prized by tourists. In times of disaster it leads to the complete collapse that we have witnessed.
No such situation exists elsewhere in the country, not even in the most venal political districts. Nowhere else is corruption so pervasive or so limitless; nowhere else is the political climate so undemocratic.
Mississippi shares many features with Louisiana, including widespread poverty, lagging development and a large black population. But it also possesses a healthy sense of community, a political structure based on American precedents and an experienced governor.
Although hit as hard as its neighbor, Mississippi is fighting its way back while Louisiana turns into Somalia. I have yet to see a single Mississippi politician sobbing, cursing, or bellowing threats into a microphone.

Any mature, thoughtful analysis of the NO disaster would compare it to the grownup response of Mississippi, which is handling a much tougher situation with aplomb.
Corrupt City. Corrupt State led by CORRUPT POLITICIANS because they are the current PLANTATION MASTERS, but the only difference now is that the Slaves VOTE to be kept on the Plantation!!!! SICKENING!!
Did the citizens of NO ever see the way that the tsunami victims handled their tragedy? I suppose not. I did not see those people stealing, looting, blaming, cursing, etc.
What is wrong with NO? It just sickens me to see the mayor continue level accusations at the President in protected MSM venues, that the black leaders use racism to bait people and divide them, this is the most glaring tragedy out of this whole thing.
The same can be said for Alabama.
There were three states hit, three major cities wiped off the map. In two of the three, the governors ordered the Guard in immediately, in two of the three the people dug themselves out of the rubble and set about trying to find their neighbors and trying to get basic services back on.
Only in one of the three did society implode, the people started shooting each other and shooting at the helicopters and firemen and cell tower repairmen. Only in one of the three did the governor elect to seal the victims in and seal the aid workers out.
In two of the three the rescue and rebuilding continues steadily as adults do what adults do.
Only in one of the three do you have elected leaders blaming government and ordering the Guard, two weeks after the storm, to drag people out of their homes by force.
The basic DNA of the Democratic Party.
Well, maybe it is not a Black or White issue?
Exactly.
The lack of national news coverage outside of NO is really irritating altho' maybe those affected in MS and AL would prefer it that way.
Blame it on the French, not Bush!
Like it!
President Bush should have used the Insurrection Act at that point to take control of the hurricane response in Louisiana.
