Disaster Can’t Destroy Gun Rights

Monday, September 12, 2005

National Rifle Association leader Wayne LaPierre slammed New Orleans authorities Monday for seizing legal firearms from lawful residents.

"What we’ve seen in Louisiana - the breakdown of law and order in the aftermath of disaster - is exactly the kind of situation where the Second Amendment was intended to allow citizens to protect themselves, " LaPierre said.

"When law enforcement isn’t available, Americans turn to the one right that protects all the others - the right to keep and bear arms," LaPierre said. "This attempt to repeal the Second Amendment should be condemned."

The New York Times reported last Thursday that no civilians in New Orleans will be allowed to have guns, quoting the superintendent of police that "only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons."

A Louisiana state statute allows the chief law enforcement officer to "regulate possession" of firearms during declared emergencies. "But regulate doesn’t mean confiscate," said Chris W. Cox, the NRA’s chief lobbyist.

"Authorities are using that statute to do what the looters and criminals could not: disarm the law-abiding citizens of New Orleans trying to protect their homes and families," Cox said.

"The NRA will not stand idly by while guns are confiscated from law-abiding people who’re trying to defend themselves," he said.

"We’re exploring every legal option available to protect the rights of lawful people in New Orleans," Cox said, "and we’re taking steps to overturn such laws in every state where they exist."

"Local authorities in New Orleans are turning nature’s assault on human life into man’s assault on human rights," LaPierre said. "Four million NRA members intend to stop this unconstitutional power grab."

Glad to hear this news. Our local San Antonio so called conservative radio talk show host had come out in support of the forced evacuations.

That was bad enough, but today when I turned him on he was peeing all over himself because he got to go down to NO and hang out with the National Guard and apparently with the BATF too. He said he was really impressed with the BATF. You should have heard him practically begging on the air to be invited into their circle so he could lick their boots some more. It was sickening.

I'll give a personal testimony to all FR's. I live in Florida and in last hurricane season my community was ravaged by two of the four hurricanes. There was no power, no immediate police protection, and no public services. We were ON OUR OWN. Florida gives easy access to firearms to all non-felons. We even have a right-to-carry law. As a precaution against possible looters I loaded my .38 Special. The important fact is that the criminals were very well aware that people all over the state were prepared to defend their lives and property. Guess what? There was no looting. In case anyone thinks my situation is anecdotal, I refer him to John Lott's many well researched books, especially "More Guns, Less Crime". The proven fact is that guns possessed by law-abiding citizens deters violent crimes. In our nanny state people have come to believe that at all times in every situation "somebody else" will look after them. But when you're really ALONE and there's no help -- who's going to protect your family and your property? ONLY YOU.

Hell they still can't find 400 or so NO cops. The ones they could find - a substantial number of them were looting.

Yes, on the evacuations several days ago. He never said one word about people being disarmed, but to be fair, I couldn't even stand to listen to his whole show. He kind of changes topics though as he goes, so I'd bet he didn't.

He came out today with his unabashed love of the BATF, so between that and his support of the mandatory evacuation order, we can make a good guess as to how he feels about gun confiscation in this instance.

He's a puke.

I'm glad the NRA has finally come out with this statement.

I'd be a lot more glad if they would have led with a lawsuit or request for an injunction rather than a press release. They haven't quite figured out yet that the rules just changed.

Still it's encouraging that they at least seemed to feel the heat from the membership. Y'all did call or email or otherwise give 'em hell, didn't you? I did, but if you didn't do it NOW. You can use their contact form, or give them a call @1-800-392-8683

City of New Orleans will be fined $1000 per day,

What do the mayor, the police chief et.al. care about the taxpayers having to pay a fine. Fine the Mayor and the police chief each $500 per day per firearm, with lessor fines for lower level folks.

I want to watch the NOPD take the assault rifles away from the Blackwater Security guys and other mercenaries that have been hired to protect private property.

To be honest, I don't listen to radio much. I'm a musician so that might have something to do with it. Between normal thinking music plays inside my head anyway.

I'd like to send this guy a big black boot, with a sticker on it that says "Property of BATF. Lick here." :-)

I see that you pinged some post-2000 Freepers. Are they aware of what you really think about them, as you posted below?

".....[post-2000 Freepers] don't have a CLUE what the constitution is and readily support ignoring and trashing it when it suits their means. (As a general rule that is.)

I really feel that this disaster gave the feds the opportunity to test their power against lawful gun-owners.

THIS IS ONLY A TEST! Be prepared for gun confiscation coming to a town near you. Disasters could be a blizzard, tornados, blackouts, gas shortages etc, whatever FEMA and the Feds want it to be.

Buy ammo and lots of it. It's getting scary out there. WE WANT OUR COUNTRY BACK!!!!!!!!!!! FREEDOMS AND ALL!!!!

but will the NRA put their money where their mouth is and start cases where the peopel will have their guns returned? Or did the NO PD just aquire more "drop guns".

Similarly after 9/11 everyone wore NYPD shirts with pride. NOBODY wants a NO PD t-shirt.

There are some post 2000 freepers who aren't losers. The influx of the Bill O'Reilly Zombies overpowered the ones who understand the Constitution.

You really ought to pickup a copy and read it. You might discover your birthright. Unfortunately the reading might be above your head even though it is written in plain language. O'Reilly can help you with the interpretation!

Talk is cheap. Guns and ammo cost money. Guts are priceless.

Which of these do you have the most of?

Nov. 3rd is correct. Those who are paying attention to the likes of Bill O'Reiley are likely worthless. I figured him out when he dissed the Swift Boat Vets.
