Use of cigarettes and alcohol by preschoolers while role-playing as adults:"honey, have some smokes"
Pubmed ^ | Sept. 2005 | Dalton MA, Bernhardt AM, Gibson JJ, Sargent JD, Beach ML, Adachi-Mejia AM, Titus-Ernstoff LT, Heathe

Department of Pediatrics, Dartmouth Medical School, Norris Cotton Cancer Center, Lebanon, NH 03756, USA. Madeline.Dalton@Dartmouth.edu

OBJECTIVE: To examine preschoolers' attitudes, expectations, and perceptions of tobacco and alcohol use.

DESIGN: Structured observational study. Children used props and dolls to act out a social evening for adults. As part of the role play, each child selected items from a miniature grocery store stocked with 73 different products, including beer, wine, and cigarettes, for an evening with friends.

SETTING: A behavioral laboratory at the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, Dartmouth College.

PATIENTS: One hundred twenty children, 2 to 6 years old, participated individually in the role-playing.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Whether or not a child purchased cigarettes or alcohol at the store.

RESULTS: Children purchased a mean of 17 of the 73 products in the store. Thirty-four children (28.3%) bought cigarettes and 74 (61.7%) bought alcohol. Children were more likely to buy cigarettes if their parents smoked (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 3.90; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.20-12.63). Children were more likely to buy beer or wine if their parents drank alcohol at least monthly (adjusted OR, 3.04; 95% CI, 1.02-9.10) or if they viewed PG-13- or R-rated movies (adjusted OR, 5.10; 95% CI, 1.14-22.90). Children's play behavior suggests that they are highly attentive to the use and enjoyment of alcohol and tobacco and have well-established expectations about how cigarettes and alcohol fit into social settings.

CONCLUSIONS: The data suggest that observation of adult behavior, especially parental behavior, may influence preschool children to view smoking and drinking as appropriate or normative in social situations. These perceptions may relate to behaviors adopted later in life.

Hmm. They were 'acting' the adult evening. Not the toddler's evening. They chose products that are successfully associated with adult entertainment.

Somehow, this doesn't bother me, but I feel a new wave of sin taxes and restrictions coming...

Can the same study be run as it would relate to applying for a job within the private sector as opposed to not applying at all or applying for a job paid for by the local, state or federal government?

I know a family that has made welfare a way of life. Their youngest child doesn't pretend to be a doctor or anything. She pretends to go pick up her food stamps before playing "shopping".

Isn't 99% of our life from learned/observed behavior ?

What was the original objective ?
To validate the obvious ?
to get published ?

Who paid for this worthless tripe ?

What new socialist programs will be on tap as a result ?

I am guessing that if the 'smokes' translates to 'pot use'; then it will be overlooked.

As for testing data as to parents as role models for child behaviors; can only ask. . ..are we paying for this and add a breathlessduh. . .

There is also learning by the negative. . .kids may hate the fact that their parents smoke. . .the smell. . .whatever. . or drink etc; and decide they will NEVER, EVER copy that particular habit. . .

For every choice. . .there is another one.

We found some on our drive back from Wheeling, WV this summer at a little convenience store. My kids had never seen them before - and begged to buy them. We let them get a pack and they tasted horrible, so we told the real cigarettes taste even worse and they swore they would never smoke.

We don't smoke btw - but we did get candy cigs when we were kids.

To avoid getting a real job in the private sector that actually requires getting worthwhile results.

What new socialist programs will be on tap as a result ?

A new government bureaucracy to check up on you at your home to see if you have cigarettes or alcohol around your kids.

Damn good thing they didn't have a gun concession inside that mock store. !

That will be the next study. If they included that in this study they won't have anything to get grant money for next year.

The same group that gave us this.

The State Boys Rebellion
http://www.simonsays.com/content/content.cfm?sid=33&pid=422319

It’s interesting that Germany looked to the US for it’s ideas on eugenics.

Excerpt from link:

>>> The State Boys Rebellion is the dramatic and meticulously researched true story of Fred Boyce and a group of boys who never accepted their incarceration at the Fernald State School in Massachusetts and insisted they were normal. In many cases, school officials noted that they were not disabled and did not belong in an institution. But the school depended on their unpaid labor, and so they were kept locked away in wards where many were beaten, raped, forced to fight each other. They were offered no hope for freedom and knew that others had grown old and died within Fernald's walls.

Yet they were denied proper education, routinely abused, and could be subjected to forced surgical sterilization, lobotomy, shock therapy, and psychotropic drugs. <<<

Should you leave your children alone with them?

When my nephew was in PUBLIC school kindergarten, the teacher called his parents in for a conference. When they arrived the school counselor and a social worker were already there with the teacher. The teacher proceded to tell my brother and his wife that she was concerned about alcohol abuse in their family. It seems that my nephew was playing restaurant with some other students and when asked what he wanted to drink said, "I'll have a beer." The teacher tried to redirect him without success and my nephew kept saying "I'll have a beer." The teacher finally got really upset and called in another teacher who asked my nephew about alcohol in their home. My 5 year old nephew told them my brother always has a beer. The teachers then called the counselor who questioned my nephew and then she called a social worker. My brother does always have 1 ONE beer when we go out for pizza or Mexican food. There is NO abuse. My brother was livid! He told them off in no uncertain terms and then removed my nephew from that school. His thinking and mine is that it is NOT the schools business if you have a drink or two, smoke cigarettes or own a gun. Teachers have moved from educating to social engineering and it is getting worse.

You are correct.

Judging from these numbers they should be a heck of a lot more concerned about pre-schoolers viewing PG-13 and R-rated movies than about what adult behaviors occur among adults.

But this is not unexpected - this is planned........."For the children" planned - and it is sickening.

What is even more sickening is that there are people here at FR that will fully support the property rights violating laws the anti-smokers will now seek, based upon this bogus crapola.

They were 'acting' the adult evening. Not the toddler's evening. They chose products that are successfully associated with adult entertainment.

Specifically, the adults they're most familiar with, because they live with them.

The real purpose of the study is to covertly discover what the parents are doing, via the kids role playing

Excellent point.

Where were these control freaks when more than 50% of the population smoke and drank? I can tell you - back then, and not that long ago, people actually had real jobs and believed in minding their own business. Now, minding everyone else's business is big business - and very lucrative, on the taxpayers' dime.

When my daughter picked up my grandaughter from KINDERGARTEN four years ago she was crying as she left the school.

When my daughter questioned her she said she was crying because Grammy(me) was going to die because she smoked. She had learned at school that smoking will make you die. This was a five year old.

Nice,huh?

No kidding?

The church I attend has yearly campouts which include ample amounts of booze. It's almost a kegger. I'm considered legalistic and like a Pharisee for my criticism of it. As is typical of congregations of Calvinist, there is little effort toward or expectation of Holy living.

I haven't quite been able to make the distinction between Christian smokin' and drinkin' and worldly smokin' & drinkin'.
