Citing public safety concerns, not a desire to limit anti-war demonstrators, McLennan County commissioners on Tuesday approved an order to prohibit parking along 23 miles of county roads surrounding President Bush's Crawford-area ranch.
In a 4-1 vote, commissioners and County Judge Jim Lewis ordered no parking or stopping of vehicles along portions of Prairie Chapel, Hester, Old Beulah, Morgan, Mattlage, Homestead, Quiet Valley, Canaan Church, Coryell City, Bohne, Spross, Castle Creek and West Middle Bosque roads.
The vote comes nearly two weeks after the end of anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan's monthlong peace vigil near the Bush ranch. The controversial vigil drew thousands of protesters, sightseers and journalists, and sparked several counterprotests. A few peace protesters continue to man the roadside camp Sheehan set up on Aug. 6.
Before commissioners voted, they conducted a public hearing and watched a slide-show presentation by Sheriff Larry Lynch from this summer's activities near Bush's ranch, which escalated after Sheehan's quest to meet with the president picked up a global following and attracted hundreds of supporters, both of Sheehan and the president.
Speaking against the restrictions, Paul McDaniel, a Vietnam combat veteran and a member of Veterans for Peace, told commissioners the campground memorial set up by Sheehan is sacred ground hallowed by the tears of families and mothers of our fallen heroes and the blood of our fallen sons and daughters.
Bush is the self-declared war president working at the Western White House to plan, recruit and build coalitions for his war agenda with the full presence of the White House press corps, McDaniel said. The First Amendment allows us reasonable access to the president to express our rights. This specific Gold Star Mother peace memorial is in the highest tradition of our free and democratic society.

Oh give me a freakin' break!
Good. I'm glad this was done. It was a royal pain for those who lived along that stretch.
Put it into effect immediately and have the Sheriff move whatever remains of that rabble out of there.
Next time they will have to stay a muc further distance away from the PONTUS, which given their rhetoric is a good thing IMHO.
Spread manure, plow it and, and plant something on it. Sacred ground my butt.
"Paul McDaniel, a Vietnam combat veteran"
Another John Kerry?
Does anyone know where exactly in the First Amendment it says anything about access to the President???
Well, cry me a river.
No doubt this "combat veteran" would give the Alamo back to Mexico.
Sacred ground indeed.
I'm glad we finally cleared up all that "vacation" stuff.
Let's always remember that these people are quislings who wish for our distruction as much as the other scumbags we have to kill in the desert. They are not "protesters". They are not "peace activists". They traitors who want us dead. The language we use is very important and can be a powerful weapon in fighting them. We started to win on the issue of abortion when we started calling ourselves pro life instead of just anti-abortion. Quislings and traitors. Let's call them what they are.
These people need to be publicly laughed at and ridiculed for their abject stupidity.
I read somewhere that the percentage of Americans who served in Vietnam was very low. I'm talking about a single digit percentage. Of my dads 5 brothers only one served. On my moms side neither of her brothers went to Vietnam. Neither side of the family was wealthy or connected.
sheenan can wallow in the pig sty if she insists . just keep the sight of her from offending any more American soldiers.
I have often wondered if the end-day receipts of the local merchants/business people has increased since these yayhoos showed up?
The IRS should also start the old Clinton-era practice of auditing and investigating all the protesters. Sheehan said she is not going to pay taxes; xome poeple end up in prison for less than that.
sacred ground my foot. It was ground SOURED by a bunch of lefties with thier own agenda. They DANCED on the graves of our soldiers beginning with cindy herself dancing on the grave of her own son. Shame cindy...shame.
I'm glad they are prohibiting parking along that stretch. These idiots are all about themselves and their protest was dangerous.
Here are a couple of quotes from articles that discribe him in that role:
"Paul McDaniel, a spokesman for the Crawford Peace House , a base of operations for peace activists, said his organization has had silent support from locals. "We've had people come to us and almost say on the Q.T., quietly, 'Hey, we agree with you guys. I just can't stand here and hold a sign, because my boss might see me, or my neighbor or my church member might see me, but I really agree with you,'" said McDaniel, who has been with the Peace House since it was established across the tracks from downtown in 2002. "
According to Paul McDaniel at the Crawford Peace House , in a phone call this afternoon, Michael Moore will indeed be in Crawford for a special screening of his antiwar documentary film Fahrenheit 9/11 along with his co-producer Jeff Gibbs and it won't have to be seen on a sheet hung from the side of a barn either! A business owner from Austin will be lending the Crawford Peace House "top notch" movie equipment. The Austin donors will shortly be opening a new theater in Bellmead, on the outskirts of Waco, dubbed the Alamo Draft House that includes the option of having dinner and a beer instead of the usual popcorn with a not-for-first-run film. According to Paul McDaniel "All are welcome," especially those who intend to vote for President Bush in November.
