This is your moment, Democrats. Don't blow it. (Dems fret over Bush moves...)

Democrats were furious that President Bush didn't take responsibility for the Katrina relief catastrophe. Now they're furious that he did. President Bush's careful admission that he is responsible for the botched federal response to Hurricane Katrina "to the extent that the federal government didn't do its job right" is a familiar Washington gambit: "turning the page." Bush's acceptance of responsibility answers cable news' echo-room charge that someone needs to be held accountable. Now the presidenthaving embraced his inner Trumancan move on and change the message.

This writer gives away the strategy of both the Dems and the MSM. The alleged "late" and inadequate federal response to Katrina is primarily seen as a POLITICAL OPPORTUNITY. That the federal response was a shambles has now become a dogma, not to be questioned. Thus the media are studiously avoiding comparing the response to Katrina with the response to other hurricanes, are NOT looking into why the New Orleans levees were never brought up to standard in 40 years, are NOT looking at the performance of the mayor and governor and police chief, are NOT looking a the timeline and basic facts of what was done and not done at the Superdome and convention center (or who was or was not responsible for what happened there), are NOT focusing on the hundreds of unused school buses, and are NOT placing any blame on the looters and thugs who ran wild in New Orleans.
I would not be surprised if the Dems grow cool to the idea of a post-crisis investigation. Any such investigation can only serve to broaden culpability at the state and local level and somewhat mitigate criticisms of the federal response. The Dems like things the way they are; the myth of federal ineptitude suits their political purposes, and they might want to cash in their chips right now.

They have to show, as one Democratic strategist put it, "that we can be the daddy party." Kind of hard when they are filled with a bunch of corrupt, whining, know-nothing "mothers".

Well...the Libs will tell you that W really didn't beat Algore back in 2000. In 2008, he'd be free to run for his second term.

When all the facts come out.... it will be shown that GWB did everything he was supposed to and went beyond extraordinary means to avoid catastrophe. This is why... IMHO, he came out and accepted responsibility for whatever the federal gov't's fault is. Now Nagin and Blanco (plus Dems) have had a gauntlet thrown at their feet...... The spotlight (and blame) has no choice but to shift in the proper direction.

One more thing: thus far, the recovery of New Orleans has come MUCH QUICKER than anyone predicted. Will Bush get any credit for that? Nope.

"When all the facts come out...."
It will be very difficult to get the facts out. Once the media have seized upon a story line ("botched federal response to Katrina") it is extraordinarily difficult to pry them loose from that story line, particular when the story line is anti-Bush or anti-Republican. The media hold onto such story lines with a death grip. The media very much operate according to certain pre-conceived stereotypes and biases; that is why the "Bush blew it" story line became so widespread so fast, reinforced at every level of the media, and will be so hard to change. The media do not want to even consider contrary information.

...are NOT focusing on the hundreds of unused school buses, and are NOT placing any blame on the looters and thugs who ran wild in New Orleans. Actually, the public has learned about the school buses that were not used and this has swayed a lot of opinion. Note the public polls a while back where most Americans felt the major blame laid with local (not federal) government in poor evacuation.
Likewise, when people realize that many of those addicted to drugs were the folks who did not evacuate and that strung out junkies mixed with honest but shattered people in tight quarters in New Orleans was a ticket for social disaster. The thugs, looting, etc. could have easily been predicted by local officials. People will understand that as well. Strung out junkies are not folks you want to be around without lots and lots of security.
An interesting side effect of the hurricane may be that street drug trafficking in the South will have been disrupted to the point that there may be some progress in curbing its reappearance in Southern Mississippi, LA, and Alabama.

The American people seem prepared to forgive the President and move on. Its the barking moonbats of the Left who won't be satisfied with an expression of presidential contrition. They want Bush's scalp nailed to the wall...

This shows me that he is a leader. Anyone that can accept total responsibility for something that they did not do is a leader. Yes, he is the CEO of America and he has the ultimate responsibility for everything that happens to it's citizens but look at the inefficiencies that occurred on the state and local level.
Since the dems got their opportunity to hear him say "I accept responsibility" they are baffled!
