I guess they figure a little porn would be more fun for the kids than Silas Marner? < /sarcasm >

.....What happened to basic professional standards?......
I think you might misunderstand the system.
Schools are for teachers not for students. Students are the source of funds required for salaries and benefits.

The story is about introducing a 9 yr old to oral sex. You don't see this as child porn? Umm, no.. it is set in 1947 India. Despite how repugnant you may see it, marrying young girls was quite common at that time.
Should I point out that Mary was 14 when she gave birth to Jesus? Does that make Joseph a pedophile for taking his wife after the birth of Christ?

Mrs. Reed,
I can almost promise you that your daughter not only would not be shocked by reading about oral sex, but she has probably done.....well you get the picture. 11th grade? This is not some empty headed little girl.
Oooh! Let's ban books! Better yet let's BURN them! Then we can feel better about ourselves AND assume the identity the liberals are always trying to hang on us.

You don't see this as child porn? Wouldn't one need to consider the context of the passage before one could make that decision? I haven't read this book, so I don't know the answer, but I know my answer would be different if the passage were describing how the 9-year-old girl was traumatized by what was done to her rather than describing how wonderful it is to have 9-year-old girls perform oral sex on teenage boys.

"The committee will deliver their findings about the book to the school board in about a month."
And in the mean time what let them continue to push this filth on our children? Amen.

It is quite disturbing that Public Schools are so interested in exposing children to sex and perversion.
Everyday I am more thankful than the previous that my child is home schooled.

Around here, high schools are assigning true classics of literature for reading assignments, including Hardy Boys books. At least there's no sex in them.

Next thing you know, Tom Sawyer will be homo-erotic because he is a 'cross-dresser'. I thought that was Huck Finn. Well, that is definitely an interracial gay novel.

So if a 9 yr old doesn't appear traumatised, it's ok?
consider the context of the passage
Nuance? Either child porn is ok or it's not.

So you have no problem with your teenager (raging hormones and all) reading a graphic description of a child being molested? I don't feel comfortable reading that stuff (I'm no prude) and I sure don't want that being assigned to my minor child in a classroom. Parents have no say however. The protest process is tedious and heavily weighted in favor of the school. A friend of mine went through that last year with "I Know why the Caged Bird Sings" which contains graphic descriptions of child rape. I don't know why we want to burden teens with those images. I guess the professionals think it best that all children experience, if only vicariously, what some children have to bear.
I will continue to homeschool.

Hey, let's ban the bible... LOTS of "child porn" in that book, too! Sorry. I've read the whole thing and I never read anyone introducing a 9 yr old to oral sex.

When my daughter was in public high school, I refused to let her read The Color Purple. What garbage that book is!
I had tried to read it and couldn't get past the first couple chapters, but I knew I didn't want my teen daughter reading it.
When I called the teacher, she said, we have to read books that make black students feel comfortable in class.
I said lady I read the first of that book in my bedroom and it certainly didn't make me feel comfortable.
Her response was well that's their culture. To which I replied, well I wouldn't be celebrating it and frankly I'd be looking to make some BIG changes in my culture if I thought that book described the norm.
When the movie came out I tried to watch it, but I still thought "what a waste! This is just too ugly and I don't want to clutter my mind with it."
The teacher did provide and alternate book for my daughter and I did not assign it when my family later began to homeschool.

So you have no problem with your teenager (raging hormones and all) reading a graphic description of a child being molested? A knee jerk reaction... you have no idea the context of the passage, described as being "introduced to oral sex by her cousin going through puberty."
