In remarks Tuesday on Hurricane Katrina, President Bush spoke of "serious problems in our response capability" and questioned whether the United States can handle another major storm or a terrorist attack. "To the extent that the federal government didn't fully do its job right, I take responsibility," the president asserted. Well said: These are steps along the higher road and are to be applauded.
But the country needs Mr. Bush to follow up with real policy changes in order to ensure recovery. It needs more than first responders, too: The president must reassess the full gamut of our vulnerabilities, from the porous borders to the paucity of Arabic translators in the military to the need for more cargo inspectors in our ports. Those are just a few of the problems the president needs to seriously re-address. Only real leadership can elevate the debate above the recriminations evident in the last two weeks.
Toward that end, we hope to see him announce a top-to-bottom review of the nation's homeland-security and disaster-preparedness capabilities. There are some indications Mr. Bush will do this. For one, on Tuesday the president pointed toward bold actions to fix the problems. "Are we capable of dealing with a severe attack or another severe storm?" he asked. "That's a very important question and it's in our national interest that we find out exactly what went on so we can better respond."

Am I the only one who thinks that Katrina has not hurt the President?
Prime rule in politics: get the bad news out early.
By election time next year, the Pres and his thorough
review of LOCAL emergency planning will have destroyed
the reputation of scores of Democrat big-city mayors,
Governors and perhaps even a few pork-barrel Senators.
Hillary's Katrina Commission was only mischief-making,
but Dubya's probe will blow the lid off in a way the MSM
can't ignore.
Do you have any faith that inasmuch as no one but grunts have been charged and tried for the prison abuse in Abu Giraub there will be any findings of a commisson run by the Homeland Security/FEMA/Administration?
What did you think about Warner, Graham and McCain's bill to limit torture that Cheney argued against, and then pulled the Defense bill rather than allow? It convinced the rest of the world that the White House had been responsible for the torture to begin with.
The point being that with his JAR so reduced, and the loss of credibility world wide, the absolute lack of interest in the outing of a CIA agent, any commission he heads, and any finding they make will be tainted from the git go..
You have to decide what you want..extremism, lies, and refusal to deal with facts have all but made conservatism a bad word. Somewhere there have to be Conservatives who stand for something reasonable...for a little integrity, and for some of the American ideals of minding our own business, paying our bills, and being a good citizen of the world.
ooooh, I smell ozone...
Do you?
Where to moderate conservatives go to get the country back?
JAR less than 40%, that's a LOT of former republicans.
The ship's sinking...you going down with it?
Or do you think there's enough reason to have Republicans or at least a two party system to try to find some Statesmen to be in charge?
here's a hint, slappy. it's a good idea to be around more than 5 minutes before you start this crap.
All of those reports have been discredited (But that doesn't stop people like you from using them to advance your agenda)
Discredited?
Which reports? What are you refuting? POW abuse, FEMA's confiscation of busses and privatly owned trucks with diesel fuel and food and water for the hospital, the proposed legislation to restrict POW abuse, withdrawing the defense appropriation, the POTUS's JAR, the disgust of many republicans.
The past several days there have been numerous accounts of the 'deal' between Red Cross and Homeland Security that blocked the Red Cross from bringing food and water in to the Convention Center and the Superdome...are they lying?
And even if you don't believe it, where is the rebuttal - do you think Karl Rove has gone on vacation - or has he just reached the point where they don't dare try to push it all under the covers.
This is serious erosion of support for republicans of all stripes...
The samo samo is not working anymore...what are you going to do about it?
I've been lurking since way before John McCain got smeared in SC....I've watched you go along to get along, you rant and rave, and blame the democrats for everything...all the while your boat's sinking...
Who would ever have believed that a freeper would accept the US owing billions to communist red china? Or adding trillions to the national debt? But, there it is...
If you stand for anything, its time to stand for it.
you're a troll
