TORONTO - Actress Shirley MacLaine denounced US leaders while promoting her latest film, calling it an antidote for the angst and confusion felt by some of her compatriots.
"In a country where we're all having trouble and struggling with what is the truth and who we are and why everybody is lying to us, I liked the idea of making a really honest picture," the Academy Award-winning actress said at the Toronto International Film Festival.
In Her Shoes" by director Curtis Hanson ("8 Mile" and "L.A. Confidential") stars Cameron Diaz ("There's Something About Mary" and "Charlie's Angels") and Toni Collette ("Muriel's Wedding" and "The Sixth Sense") as two sisters with only their size eight-and-a-half feet in common, both searching for a sense of identity and a family connection.
"I think that families are the most important lesson we can learn from and in, and I haven't seen many pictures lately that have to do with the search for who we are and identity," said MacLaine, who appeared in the movie without makeup or a wig as the sisters' estranged grandmother.
MacLaine, 71, who has appeared in 57 films, also noted that she is content growing old, enjoys the "wisdom" and "experience" and "quiet confidence" that comes with it, the likes of which she emulated in the film, inspired by her "repressed Canadian mother" who never expressed her feelings or thoughts to her daughter.
"(At a certain age) if you don't know who you are, there is a serious problem, as we can see by some of our leaders," said MacLaine.
"Sure, the hollywood liberals will take there (their) shots when there (they're)outside the borders... "
Thanks for the corrections.. :)
Thanks for the corrections.. :)
You're very welcome. You're very welcome.
Frank and Dino would be disappointed in how their "little sister" turned out. ;)
seems like the lsd is catching up with that 60's hag.....who wants to see her in a movie? thought she died years ago......
I remember reading about the self-important Shirley MacLaine (she was a reincarnated ruler of lost Earth, you know) attending a late 1970s White House dinner thrown by Mr. Carter for the visting Chinese leaders, who had insisted that Richard Nixon be placed at the top of the guest list. She publicly howled about Nixon being invited to her dinner and how he didn't belong there; when she went through the line, the Chinese premier stated that was bewildered as to who the woman was and couldn't figure out what she was doing there.
Great actress but a dumbass human being.
It was only her carrer that died years ago... :)
It does amaze me how self important these people think they are...
To think that their job ever remotely qualify them to speak of politics smacks of arrogance and stupidity..
The name and description of her movie has "stinker-headed-right-for-the-video-store" written aaaall over it.
Sounds like a genuine snorefest.
She's been a lefty for over 4 decades now. Nothing new here. She showed herself to be quite the witch when she was on Dave Letterman's show and called him an a--hole when he was not being rude to her.
Anyway, she was a big JFK supporter and has only moved farther to the left ever since.
Another Peter Pan.
I think people forget her earlier antics which included seances, speaking with spirits, and using crystals to divine the future. This is one very wacky broad who needs help.
She and her brother Warren Beatty are hardcore lefties. Ignore 'em.
Poor Shirley. She is such a putz.
Superannuated moonbat alert!
Great story - in my next life I hope there isn't a Shirley MacLaine around!
