"Dopey Southerners"? Well, most "dopey southerners" probably don't give a damn what terminology dopey northerners use either.

I was working in a plant as a contractor in Louisiana a few years ago. I noticed that there were lots of safety signs in and around the plant, BUT they were all in picture format. One of the plant engineers noticed that I had noticed the signs and he told me that 70% of his workforce was illiterate.

I saw a similar thing in a different context. The McDonald's restaurant in Greenwood Village (south of Denver, CO). All the employees were Spanish speakers. None spoke any English. Most of the customers spoke nothing but English. The counter tops had large picture mats with menu items in a nice orderly grid. Point at what you want and hold up the right number of fingers to convey how many. That was February 2000.
