Oh, for pete's sake. That's ridiculous. My kids are white, and have been referred to as yard apes quite often. I think it refers to their habit of climbing and hanging from trees, playground equipment, etc. Anklebiters, crumbcrunchers, yardapes...all references to kids of various ages, regardless of color.
Sounds rather like some of the talk around here of late.
I can't believe someone in a position of responsibility would use such an insulting term..Shame on her.
The derogatory term is based on long-held stereotypes comparing blacks to monkeys and is considered "highly offensive" to blacks, said Dr. John Simpkins
When I was a kid growing up in Miami in the 60's that term was used for kids in our neighborhood who stayed out at night sitting under the street light talking...we were not black
What do I know, I guess we were not PC
Yep. Pretty stupid.
Totally stupid. I don't like the term "yard apes" and I never used it to refer to my kids, but it is not a racial reference. It simply means kids, as in "rug rats."
I wish blacks would stop thinking that every reference to apes or monkeys refers to them. It doesn't; the only people who seem to believe it does are blacks.
Same here. Just referred to kids in general.
Wow, she's stupid. No wonder she ended up "working" in a government gulag.
I must respectfully disagree. Where I grew up in the south, "yard apes" and "porch monkeys" were very typical insults for blacks - at least, I never heard it applied to white folks.
Anklebiters, crumbcrunchers, tricycle motors, curtain climbers - now THOSE are good names for kids :)
And rug rats.
Visions of the airline that was sued because of "eennie, meennie, miennie, moe."
Did Dr. Simpkins offer a comment regarding the offensiveness of the term "house n***er" when used by blacks to refer to other blacks that happen to hold conservative views or work in republican administrations?
And, with a staff of forty.
I hate to burst anyone's bubble, but "yard apes" doesn't have any reference to black people. It refers generally to playground (yard) bullies (apes). I believe that Judy Blume used the term as well--that may be where I first heard it. But don't let me get in the way of a PC lynching...
"When I was a kid growing up in Miami in the 60's that term was used for kids in our neighborhood who stayed out at night sitting under the street light talking...we were not black"
Same here. My Mom must be the most racist lady in the world. She called my brother and I yard-apes all the time.
Must be a southern thing.
One of the 25 executives and managers employed by the school, or 4 percent of the total, is a black male, according to the report. In the labor pool qualified for such positions, about 2.9 percent are black males, according to the report, meaning the school has exceeded its goal in that category.Quotas, racist quotas, and ridiculous quotas.Greenville Tech also employs one black female in a management or executive role -- also 4 percent of the total -- but since 9.4 percent of the qualified labor force is comprised of black females, the school has "underutilized" black women, the report said.
No, shame on the idiots who complained. It's like when the DC City Council complained about the use of the word "denigrate" - which means to disparage, and is related to the Latin word meaning small or less - because they thought the "nigrate" part of it referred to blacks.
Yard apes may be silly, but it has nothing to do with blacks, and simply a fondly insulting term for kids (of any color).
Well, in Louisiana (my sister attended Louisiana Tech in the late '70s) the term "yard ape" has historically been used pretty exclusively as a derogatory term for black people - not quite as offensive as the "N-word" but close. A professional "educator" in Louisiana should have known better.
Our very white, blue-eyed baby is referred to as a little ape-child every day. She does not crawl. She moves around like an ape. Sort of on her feet and her butt. And she uses one hand to propel herself forward. It's the funniest looking thing. She's an ape child.
