September 15, 2005 - Floyd County, Iowa
More than two months after someone killed Evelyn Miller and dumped her body in the Cedar River, investigators are focused again on the apartment complex where her mother and fiancee' lived when she disappeared.
Boaters found Miller's body in the Cedar River in Floyd County, days after she disappeared from her mother's apartment. So far, no one's been charged, even after a federal grand jury heard evidence late last week.
Gene Meyer, the director for the Division of Criminal Investigation, says new information led investigators to back the apartment complex where they searched the building, garages, and two cars. Investigators with the DCI and the Floyd County Sheriff's Office searched this apartment complex, where Evelyn lived with her two younger brothers, her mother, Noel Miller, and Noel's fiancee', Casey Fredricksen.
According to the Charles City Press, investigators spent three hours at the apartment. Agents focused on a double garage where they examined clothing, blankets, pillows and a tent. The DCI crime investigation unit also took swabs from a carpet found inside of the garage.
"There are agents working there everyday and then, from time to time, we have our forensic experts from the crime lab come up to look for physical evidence and that's an ongoing process," Meyer says.
In another garage, investigators took pictures of a dark-colored Toyota Supra and examined hunting clothes. Agents also photographed a black, late 90's model Chevy Monte Carlo.
Before investigators left, an officer was overheard saying they were going to take pictures inside of the apartment. "What we do in each investigation is dictated by what we learned the day before. So, the more we learn it may dictate us to go conduct a search where we hadn't previously searched or it may dictate that we go back and re-search someplace we've previously searched," Meyer says.
Evelyn's paternal grandfather, Richard Christie, has set up a web page dedicated to his granddaughter. There you can find a very personal tribute to Evelyn and even post personal comments or information about the case. To see this site, Click Here.
The Floyd County Attorney's Office says Marilyn Dettmer was not available for comment. Dettmer has said she is very confident someone will be charged with Evelyn Miller's murder.
Evelyn was engaged to be married to a woman when she disappeared? And that's just in the first sentence. Zot, these people can't write worth a darn.
"where Evelyn lived with her two younger brothers, her mother, Noel Miller, and Noel's fiancee', Casey Fredricksen."
Her mother's fiancee... yes, its poor writing.
Her mother's fiance', unless her mother was engaged to a woman. Or they could just be blunt and say, "the guy her mother lived with at the moment."
