That is no solution; as is clear from history; receipts are easily forged, faked and over-inflated.

As for granting conservatives control, if I heard the President right tonight, he is going to give locals the control. From what I have heard, read and learned about the area; conservatives are nearly non-existent, as is plainly visible from looking at the previous history of N.O. and the entire area. Corruption was the norm, rather than the exception to the rule and those in power are once again going to be calling the shots. If the president does try to bring in fiscal, political conservatives from outside the area, all blazes is going to break loose. "Bush the poor-hating, white racist" will once again be heard throughout the land and he will fold like a house of cards.

Thank you. I'm pretty chintzy about taxpayer loot. Even if one doesn't believe that taxation is theft, it's obvious that tax revenues are unearned just by the casual way the govt spends the stuff.
But this is different. America took it on the chin here, and the quickest, most efficient recovery entails an all-out federal effort. In the long run it's cheaper than strict reliance on private enterprise and charity.

No, actually, I'm a big admirer of Rand. She was spot on about much of human nature. However, her solutions were whacky.

A society cannot be built on reason and atheism.

Be Seeing You,

Chris

How is it a 'personal attack' to ask if you sell insurance when you have pushed it in every post?

Tonight I heard the President of the United States give hope to an entire region of the country, and in doing so, to the country itself.

I heard a lot of good ideas, workable plans, deep thought, calls for personal responsibility and compassion, and a clarion call for this country to do the right thing.

And from you and your buddies, I have heard "flood insurance" "getting rid of a mad man" "just like LBJ" and a whole lot of other nonsense.

Sorry, Jeff......but I'll stick with the man with ideas and hope, and leave you gripers to whine and moan and offer nothing.

Not a hard choice.

Thanks for your honesty.

So you think President Bush is a racist, eh?

You can't see a sound economic plan, IMHO.

Amazing. Astounding.

I hope you'll think about this some more.

"If the bank won't lend on it, it shouldn't be built". This is surreal coming from a conservative (?). I have built upon property near a river. It has flooded 3 times in the last 22+ years. I did not borrow money to build. Or to rebuild twice. If a man has the wherewithall to build, studies the risk, and decides to build; he should not have to go beg a bank. Nobody gave me a FEMA card, nor did I ask for one. The people that have been on the government dole have been by and large relocated out of New Orleans. Anybody that owns property there should be able to rebuild. Local government will need time to get infrastructure back online. I have no problem with an enterprise zone in a city. As long as there is sufficient oversight.

Whoa, if you've got your own money, build all you want to...I'm talking about the feds insuring "flood prone" properties.

Also, if you can get "private flood insurance" (probably impossible), go ahead and build.

But, don't ask me to insure your beachfront/flood prone real estate.

Tonight was conservatism at its finest.

Worthy praise was given.

Compassion and understanding was shown.

The offer of jobs for returning people through tax incentives to companies willing to locate in the area was right.

The offer of 5000 dollars to each person who lost everything, money designated for job training, job searching and daycare was RIGHT.

The idea that the federal money would be OVERSEEN by a federal group the President assigns and NOT the local or state authorities was RIGHT.

The idea that the federal government MUST BE GIVEN authority to move rapidly into a devastated area and not be held up by local and state authorities was RIGHT.

The plan to demand that every single large city in this nation update and or perhaps invent a WORKABLE evacuation plan complete with necesary medical and food supplies in case of weather or terro related castrophy was RIGHT.

This was conservatism...this speech and what it represents was conservatism at its best.

That the those returning who are able to work will be expected to do so, and will be helped with opportunity to find work was exactly RIGHT! RIGHT ON! AND on the RIGHT.

AMEN ! Best post on this thread tonight, by far. Thank you.

You did not make a typo because you are still wrong. It is not 5 years until January 20, 2006. I hope you do nmot expect to get paid for 6 hours or 5 hours if you only work 4plus hours. That is socialist think. Most freepers including me look at the big picture, you are reactionary in your thinking, when you have not even seen the plan. Freepers are thinking of 2006-2008 and for decades to come. Every single day we work to keep the Republican Majority and to increase it. All over the country Republican Women's groups reach into minority community with reading programs, and book bags filled with learning tools, and the teachers and kids love it, and we love it. We can make a difference and so can you if you are willing. George Bush can take this bad situation where the corruption and poverty pimps have destroyed city after city and begin to embrace poor people and build them up with help from the Private Business sector. He even cajoled the Unions to help out. He beat up the dems bad tonight and he did it with a sweet smile.

beam me up Scotty.

Indeed!

Seems that some of us are on a lonesome trail tonight. It just bugs me to no end for pols(even our own; maybe especially our own) to gin up the printing presses so early in any situation.

The sad truth is, if "W" didn't get out front with the spending he, and Pubbies(being mean spirited and all) generally would be trashed by the Dims and their MSM cheerleaders mercilessly. Sort of puts conservatives between a rock and a hard spot don't it?

Thank you both for your kind words.

As to the storm being an equal opportunity destroyer - there was almost no area that did not receive some damage -wind, rain, flood water.

Your comments, CedarDave, about the nastier comments of some posters should be noted and are welcomed. Perhaps some of their anger stems from seeing this disaster only in terms of money spent and not in terms of future monetary gain in getting a major American port up and running again.

To the doubters and carpers all I can say is look around your town and imagine a natural disaster hitting it, destroying it, destroying lives and families. Do you accept others' telling you to walk away from your home, your life because some people don't think it's worth spending money on rebuilding? Think about that as you walk around your home, your neighborhood or your town.

Bush's spending is out of control. Unfortunate tarnish on what is otherwise a solid presidential term.

How would you rate M.Brown's FEMA response to the previous dozen hurricanes prior to Katrina?"

Ask the folks in New Orleans how it matters to them.

Despite your sidestepping of a question that damns your position, it should matter to them.
a) Why was their state unable to respond like Alabama and Mississippi did to Katrina?

b) Why do you not have a problem with FEMA's hurricane response before Katrina showed up on the radar?

c) Katrina was the biggest storm to hit America - yes, it was overwhelming - do you have a problem with that?

d) Alabama and Mississippi dealt with that overwhelming situation better than Louisiana did - do you have a problem with that?

e) New Orleans flooded, and Blanco was dysfunctional in her "response"... what part did you expect to go smoothly?

Have you heard about the ABC coverage of the speech? They showed it to evacuees in the Astrodome and afterward many, if not all, had nice things to say about the President and bad things to say about the Governor and Mayor.
I looking for a video of this online.
