I've never fired my Series 80/M1911 in low light conditions, and hope I never have to. And you're right, the Series 80 is a very accurate semiauto. When I took the concealed carry course I had a great instructor who showed me everything I was doing wrong. Even though I'm not the best pistol shot in the world (always preferred long guns) I got 20 out of 20 with 2 head shots in the silhouette when I qualified.

I've never fired mine for defensive/offensive purposes. Only practice...including low light. I also prefer long(er) weapons. I've always liked .30 caliber and 6mm rifles that smack small targets at 800 yards, and I've got a few that will this, plus some better. :-)

I know I'm going to take heat for saying this, but I've always generally thought of handguns as "glorified slingshots". I know there are exceptions like Remington's XP-100, and the Thompson Contender. Even still, I LIKE the Colt Series 80, and wouldn't part with it easily.

I believe that none other than Jeff Cooper ("the father of modern combat handgunning") once said that "a pistol is what you use to fight your way back to your weapon."

Given a choice, in most cases I would prefer a longarm, either a shotgun or rifle, to a handgun. But I'm perfectly happy with a handgun... Preferably my S&W 625-5 revolver (worked over by Ron Power!)

I've got a 1911 as well, and am quite well practiced with it, but I've got mixed feelings about it in a self defense situation: I've always felt that a single action semi-auto is less a defensive weapon than a revolver. Of course, that wouldn't stop me from using it.
