Kathleen Blanco: I Should Have Called the Military
Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco's abrupt decision Wednesday night to take responsibility for her state's inadequate response to the Hurricane Katrina disaster followed an inadvertent confession that was caught on camera where Blanco admitted she blew it.
"I really should have called for the military," Blanco said, while chatting with her press secretary in between TV interviews. "I really should have started that in the first call."
Unbeknownst to Blanco, her bombshell acknowledgment was recorded on a network satellite feed, and by Tuesday the clip was getting wide exposure in Louisiana news broadcasts.
In the early days of the Katrina crisis, disaster management experts repeatedly blamed the failure to send in the National Guard for the city's descent into chaos.
Most observers blamed the White House for the blunder - a misconception that was thoroughly dispelled by the governor's inadvertent confession.
Some say Blanco's blooper was responsible for the abrupt change of tone in her speech Wednesday night to the Louisiana legislature.
Where earlier she and her aides had openly blamed the Bush administration for bungling Katrina rescue efforts, Blanco announced: "The buck stops here, and as your governor, I take full responsibility."
Just as surprising were Blanco's words of praise for the White House: "I want the people of Louisiana to know that we have a friend and a partner in President George W. Bush. I thank you, Mr. President."
That is, dispelled among those who pay attention.
W accepted the blame. He may turn out to be the best Democrat president we've ever had.
I'm curious as to just what this liberal/socialist knob would have called the U.S. military: "pigs"; "baby-killers"; "fascists"; "war-mongers"........
This broad is a prime and living example of what is wrong with putting RATs into office.
Anywhere there is a story on the blame game, I look for a photograph of the buses underwater. If it's not there among the pictures I have no need to look any further.
She should have called Wahhhhmmmbulance first.
The President accepted blame for any failures of the federal government.
To date, there have been precious few valid complaints.
However, many people are going to be sorry they get what they wished for.
The feds coming into a state and taking control is NOT such a great idea.
Wait till morning, when I call our local city hall and tell our mayor that he can reach the military all by himself!
He's gonna have one big ole good day! :)
No, most mainstream media blamed the White House for the blunder. The observers knew better.
Does anyone have a link to this?
Note to OP: your Link does not work.
She didn't admit anything until the cat was already out of the bag? I smell trouble for the Louisiana State government.
When was that? I heard him accept responsibility. Those who understand the English language know that there is a very large difference between the two.
Well, I'm sure the news media will report this with all the enthusiasm that they have shown in covering the Federal government's shortcomings };-)
Has anyone actually seen this admission or is this another NewShmuck story?
Is this what finally shut Landrieu up?
But hey, aren't they our feds now?
Thanks for posting this article. I saw the clip on WDSU TV, but I never was able to find any word of it on the Internet.
This is what nails it that this Blanco broad is stupid. There is a camera 2 feet from her face and she makes this confession to her press person sitting near her. I understand that the audio portion was not from a standard reporter's mic in her face and it was some secondary cameraman's mic, but how stupid is she. But I'm glad she did it.
Blanco's a moron. I think her and Mary Landrieu have done a wonderful job of proving this to the American people.
thanks for the link Jalapeno. Come see this.
check the video off of #41.
I doubt the people of Mississippi think the same way. And that probably goes for every other RED state as well.
Those of us in blue states pray for the FEDS.
Sorry, that's post # 21
yes, you are a screw-up.
President Bush was being more of a mensch and statesman than a cowardly politician -- which is not surprising. In this regard Bush stands leagues ahead of his sloven and corrupt detractors. Although I have had misgivings about his aversion to "go Roman" on them, I respect his call. The second sentence of your post makes no sense whatsoever.
""I really should have called for the military," Blanco said, "
You can squelch the truth for a time but truth has a way of popping back up. Bush owned up to his end of the mess up. Blanco played the blame game and now the veil is lifted for all to see. I hope the citizens of Louisiana vote for quality officials rather than the Klunks they have right now.
I wonder if Kathleen Blanco carries the same sentiment about the military that so many other Democrats have. She must have reluctant to send a regiment of baby killing, hooch burners into New Orleans.
""I really should have called for the military," Blanco said, "
Now, the dems want the military to bail them out. Maybe they will remember that the next time they are pushing army recruiters off their college campuses. But, I won't hold my breathe.
Thanks Fred. I heard a clip of Blanco on the radio this morning praising President Bush and I KNEW there had to be a story behind that flipflop. Now I know!
I saw her 'I take full responsibility' articles this morning, but this 'I should have called in the military' is new news.
Landrieu was spending much of her time covering Blanco's butt, so this could have been what shut her up.
Her presslady is doing enough parsing to make Bill Clinton proud and the governor is nuancing enough to make John Kerry beam with joy.
Google brings up lots of them, all of which are laced with snide anti-Bush remarks and generally ambiguous and leaving out significant events... The time of the levee break is variously reported from 6 hours before the storm hit Lake Ponchatrain, to 24 hours later. Can anyone pinpoint when it became known that the levee(s) broke? And if the levee broke Monday morning, why did the MSM report on the evening newscasts that New Orleans had come through without serious damage? I watched Aaron Brown with my own eyes pronounce that N.O. had dodged the bullet.
BIG difference. One's phony and liberal, the other's mature and responsible. It's what real leaders do, Eric.
That's a huge job, too
From CNN (emphasis is mine):
"Katrina exposed serious problems in our response capability at all levels of government and to the extent the federal government didn't fully do its job right, I take responsibility," Bush said during a news conference. Source: CNN!
Gee, ya think?
EXACTELY..
LOL, she knew it was all going to come out in the end and she better speak up now!
responsibility, not blame. I absolutely admire a leader that can accept responsibility. We rarly see a leader with that much character, they usually try to pin it on others.
Is she a sister to Madeline Allbright? They're both useless lumps.
The POTUS has repeatedly demonstrated the power of his in-person charm and friendliness to disarm and persuade. Must have worked with Governor Blank Slate too.
