How ever will they find out who killed who and prosecute them?

Why would they start now? The NOPD has one of the lowest arrest and conviction rates for murder in the best of times. It's been said that the attitude of the NOPD is that so long as black gangsters are killing other blacks that it's a good thing.

And I wouldn't dare disagree with the brave men who saw it firsthand.

What a shame.

The Salvation Army might well be the last honest 'big' charity, it seems.

Do you recall the big legal fight when the SA refused to hire professed homosexuals because doing conflicted with their Christian principles?

That happened about the same the time that Big Brother/Sisters adopted the policy of hiring openly gay mentors.

Now the death toll in Louisiana is up to 579. I wonder how many of these deaths are hurricane related and how many are criminal activity.

yes--didn't they get run out of San Francisco? or lose funding from the United Way (another organization i haven't supported since the late '80's)...

While I admire this woman's pluckiness, the 2nd to last para makes me want to say " Gimmee gimmee gimmee! WAhhh! Houston refugees are getting more than I!"

Since when did society become responsible for natural disasters? Since when did a handout become required?

The next time we have an ice storm and are out of power for three days, instead of melting ice and snow for water, heating and reading with kerosene and basically spending the whole day just getting thru to the next day, I'm going to call the Red Cross and DEMAND a handout. I will ignore everything my mother taught me about self-reliance, and I won't file a claim with my insurance co for motel $$. Hey, doing all that self-reliance stuff can really eat up your day! I'll just check into a motel and watch TV all day....on someone else's dime!

One too many.
But we will never really know.

Those thugs that made it to Texas will be rounded up eventually, but only after they commit crimes here.

I live in the boonies and until relatively recently, the power went off every time it snowed, ice-stormed or somebody whapped a pole.

The lights were usually off anywhere between 2-4 days.

[the "end of the line" doesn't get the same devoted electric company attention that the towns do]

Every house out this way had [and most still have] candles, kero lamps, canned goods, Coleman stoves, wood stoves, a -corded- telephone and hand-crank water pumps.

We'd go to the local gas station and buy bags of ice for the refrigerated stuff unless it was winter and very cold.
Then we'd just sit it all out on the porch in boxes.

Throw in a decent outhouse and you were all set.

If you got *really* bored, you could hop in the car and go to Monkey Wards and watch TV for a while....:)

I reckon in retrospect, we should've all checked into the Holiday Inn instead and sent the bill to our governor.

. . . on the other hand, what is she supposed to do with a 16-pound turkey?

Too bad she's not a Boy Scout . . .

Turkey Under a Bucket

Calls for a sixteen pound turkey. All you need is a bucket, a bag of charcoal, a large nail or timber spike, a balled up wad of aluminum foil (or a large lemon) and a match (plus any seasonings you want).

Turkey sandwiches, turkey salad, and turkey soup will take care of the leftovers.

This area ALWAYS loses power in an ice storm -- as well as in events like hurricanes (we've had 3 recently pass through N. GA downing trees and powerlines and flooding everything in sight). My dad always had a little Sears generator, and I thought that was something you bought when you got a house, like a lawnmower.

We've got all our Scouting and camping equipment and a decent supply of canned goods. Our house is on shelving rock so we get a little water in one end of the crawlspace when it rains hard, so we got some discarded 12v computer UPS batteries to run a marine bilge pump when the power's out.

Should I whine to the Red Cross or the feds instead?

You should whine to both agencies to maximize your benefits and you should *not* wait intil the next blackout.
Be proactive.
Start whining NOW and have a nice stockpile laid up ahead of time....;))

"The survivors would recieve the well-wishing cards from the donators, but the Red Cross kept the cash."

Gee.
I bet that just warmed the cockles of their hearts.

:::rolls eyes:::

Such audacity.

Scout websites are a great place for camping recipes. I just realized that this is a Girl Scout website . . . first evidence I've ever seen that GS actually CAMPS . . . (our GS around here are a bunch of wimps - my girl couldn't wait to turn 14 so she could join a Boy Scout Venture Crew.) It was just the first site that came up . . . usually I grab it from a BSA website.

Anyhow, the "turkey under a bucket" recipe really works, we've cooked it in the back yard several times. We usually use a 4-5 pound chicken, because we're feeding a family instead of a whole troop. My variation is, I take a large lemon and cut an "X" in one end, and place that over the nail instead of a crumpled up ball of aluminum foil. Gives the chicken a nice lemon flavor.

There WILL be fat dripping on the ground, so use a large square of aluminum foil under the chicken, and cook it somewhere on bare ground where you won't mind grease and burned spots after you're done!
