Who else is going to fund the black-felt paintings of those naked chicks from Tijuana or those great pictures of the dogs playing poker? It is these great things the contribute to the life's blood of a culture. Yes, there's nothing better than these things and a real good Saturday afternoon belch.

Yep, I know the history of the Old Media's historic victory to save NEA funding. 1990-1999 was the 'Last Golden Decade' of Old Media dominance. And it's good to review it on this thread. I believe that in media terms, 1994 was well into the pre-revolution days. Others will, of course, disagree.
But if you talk with people on the street about the horrid art of the NEA, you get immediate outrage. Peoples' voices raise. Their eyes widen. We're not talking about a tough issue for the anti-leftists, here. It's an easy and fast win, with staying power.

Actually, it's completely relevant. The funding for the disaster relief and rebuilding has to come from somewhere-they can't just mint more money-and either the taxpayer gets soaked some more,or cuts are made. Which naturally leads to the question,what gets cut? The suggestions proffered here are sensible,and I'm certain that we can walk and chew gum-find the money,and decide to get it from sources whose causes most Americans don't support anyway.

Bingo, particularly those causes that have nothing whatsover to do with compassion for law-abiding Americans in need.
The Feds also fund performance arts such as orchestras. This money is as well spent as any welfare money. Better, actually, since performance of orchestral music tends improves people whereas welfare tends to create a permanent dependent class.

Someone who is talented with a violin has a work-based skill. It might not generate much income, unlike someone skilled with an electric guitar, but hey, there's still the time and health to learn how to play an electric guitar. Play the violin at a restaurant, maybe? Only a private enterprize violinist would know best I guess.
A construction worker who lost his legs might be a bit worse off and, due in large part to a crushing tax burden prior to his injury, need help until he learns accounting or something.
And there again: if we are free to give from our own hearts rather than at gunpoint, we wouldn't be sitting here making these comparisons. Finding consensus can take up a lot of time, you know? Another reason to be 'Pro-Choice' on where we give. Sad FRegards....

Thanks:) Conservatism,or more specifically,self-reliance,is alive and well in my area. FEMA distribution centers that opened yesterday in the Biloxi/Gulfport areas reported lines of like 50-100 people,LOL. Of course,the Red Cross lines will be MUCH longer-but they're giving cash,from what I hear. I won't be in the line-my home and family are fine,my yard looks better now than it did even before Katrina,LOL(extended family sure comes in handy!),and we're making it just fine,now that the power's been back on.That's all I cared about for myself-AC,computer access,and being able to flush again!
