FBI Arrests Oswego Mayor on sex charge Gosek jailed. Hearing scheduled in Syracuse federal court this afternoon.

Oswego Mayor John Gosek was arrested Friday evening by the FBI and state police and accused of the federal offense of using a telephone to "persuade, induce, entice and coerce an individual under the age of 18 years to engage in sexual activity," according to a news release from the U.S. attorney of the Northern District of New York.

Oh yes the media is glad to tell us he's a Republican.

Wanna bet that if he was a demon-rat that you'd still be guessing!

Just curious: how close is Oswego to Ithaca?

Geographically, I mean...

Remember Harry Chapin's "The Mayor of Candor Lied?" That song always pops into my head when these cases come to light. ;)

About 150 miles apart. Both are college towns, but Oswego isn't like Ithaca.

Who gives a damn which party he belongs to? If he's found guilty it means he's a damn perverted weirdo. Period.

RINO's can be as bad as Democrats but at least we don't try to pass over the guilt when one of ours is wrong. If he did what he's accused of, put him in jail.

Definitely a Democrat. Otherwise the story's leading sentence would have taken care to mention his party affiliation. What is it with Democrats and underage sex? Go figure!

My brother was stationed in Oswego (USCG). The few times I visited, I was struck with how depressing a place that town is. Parts of "downtown" looked as if nothing had painted or maintained since the '30's.

The story says he's a Republican, if you read the whole thing.

Which makes this article a rare exception to political crime reporting, which can in almost all cases be expected to prominently feature the party affiliation of Republicans caught in misconduct, and to obscure or omit entirely the party affiliation of Democrats similarly situated.

Ithaca is at the southern tip of one of the finger lakes (Cayuga, I believe). Oswego is further north, on the south shore of Lake Ontario.

Oswego's main industry is electricity. It has two nuclear and one fossil-fuled power plant nearby.

Ithaca's main industry is the promulgation of left-wing ideology and the utilization of large quantities of imported hand cream.

Interesting comments on that website. Since this is politics, I feel that it's better to let the court decide Gosek's guilt or innocence. People sure don't like him, though...

The press evidently as they only list a party affiliation if it's a Republican.

Oswego's main industry is electricity. It has two nuclear and one fossil-fuled power plant nearby.

Also the state college, where my parents taught. A fair amount of tourism these days, what with Fort Ontario, Harborfest, and great sunsets.

It's lost about 25% of it's population and almost all of its industry from 100 years ago.

I grew up there and was glad to get out, but every now and then I really miss it.

When I was in high school, back in Oswego, 20+ years ago, the then-mayor and an alderman, ended up in a fistfight during a meeting. One of the other alderman tried to break it up and got a black eye for his efforts....

Considering the alderman with the black eye was a former teacher of mine I held a grudge against, I figured it was karma.

I was driven by it tons of times growing up -- hard to avoid the Forks in the Road -- but I was never actually in it.

True enough,
However, every time a Democrat is arrested for any crime, the press conveniently forgets to mention his/her party affiliation. You NEVER read about a Democrat getting in trouble.

When it's a Republican, it is ALWAYS mentioned.

Not always true, but you have a point. It just gets old when someone commits a crime, instead of looking at the crime, and the individual, many go political.

True.

I have also seen cases where the criminal was a democrat but the newspaper called him a "conservative democrat".

Of course there are no "liberal democrats". They would be called "progressive" or "moderate".

The charge, alleging use of a telephone as interstate commerce for the purposes of illegal sex, falls under federal law commonly known as the Mann Act.

LOL. And they say the legislature has no sense of humor.

Its odd that I had to dig to see what party he was in. He is a Republican in a mostly Democratic city in a 99% Republican county.

When heating prices go up 35% this winter, and we have a record snowfall this winter (the lake temperature is still around 70 degrees), ping me if you still miss it and I will help you get over it!

OTOH, my 9 year-old son was born down here in Florida and has never actually seen snow, except on TV... If I had the spare change I might fly up there for a few days...

UPDATE

Court papers detail accusations against Oswego mayor

Oswego Mayor John Gosek, who was arrested Friday and accused of arranging to have sex with a minor, was released with an electronic monitor Saturday after appearing in court.

He’s not allowed to leave his house unless there is a medical emergency until he’s due to meet with probation officials Monday morning.

Gosek was arrested Friday night after he paid a confidential informant $250 to introduce him to two 15-year-old girls at a Salina hotel, according to court papers.

Some Oswego politicians are calling for Gosek to resign.
