I don't believe in rewarding foreigners who have violated our immigration laws. A better idea, if we're going to set up a guest worker program, would be to let in some of the tens of millions of foreigners from around the world who have been waiting patiently for years to legally immigrate to the United States.

Good idea, as much as I see the good in Mexican immigration, I still would rather see 1,000 more Polish engineers than a similar number of Mexican carpenters. Immigration has always been the cornerstone of this country, it is only logical that we secure the borders, blow out the leeches that have no SS#, abolish the Tax I.D. card program and be a little more selective about who we let in.

According to Michelle Malkin,

I just got off the phone with Phil Gee, associate manager of media relations at America West, who promptly returned my late evening call. Here’s what he told me:

On Sept. 15 (Thursday), America West Flight 17 took off from JFK Airport at 6:05pm EDT. The captain “took the initiative,” says Gee, and reported an “irregularity” to air traffic control as the plane was ascending. The plane continued to Phoenix and landed safely at 8:55pm MST. FBI and other authorities met and interviewed all of the crew and passengers on the plane. The investigation is continuing.

Gee would not say whether the pilot or other crew or passengers reported witnessing a missile firing.

"Nothing is confirmed," Gee said.

Although one tipster says America West has informed its pilots of the incident, Gee denied that any company bulletin has been issued. Gee mentioned that he had heard that other airline pilots had posted about the incident on an online forum."

Some things have been successfully covered up for very long times, and some things have been successfully covered up forever.

There are clearly times when it is in the best interest of the country to cover things like this up. If there was a real missile launched and it missed, the economic damage which would be done by widely publicising it would convert a failed terror operation into a highly successful one.

Also, the perps may not cover their tracks as thoroughly if they believe they are in the clear.

Consider the fact that most of the anti-terror operations since 9-11 have been highly classified.

While I don't like it one bit, I recognize that the civilian population does not need to know everything. "Freedom of the press" and "disclosure of all information" are not the same thing.

This is bogus. Our Dept. of Homeland Security has everything under control: our borders, who's who here in the U.S., worker screenings at major airports, etc.

According to Passur, the flight took off about 15 seconds before 6:50PM on Runway 22R, and flew straight out over Jamaica Bay, over the Rockaways, and across the Atlantic Ocean to just south of Sandy Hook, NJ. Typical flight path for a plane going southwest out of JFK.

According to PASSUR, the aircraft that took off directly before AWE 17 was Delta flight 2029, a 757 bound for Orlando. Emirates flight 9900, a 747, followed AWE 17, bound for Gothenberg, Sweden.

According to PASSUR, AWE 17 flew within a few miles of but far below a Lear Jet 60 at (37,000 feet) and a Sun Country 737 getting ready to land at JFK (at 13,000 feet) while climbing over the Atlantic Ocean at 4000 feet.

According to Google Earth, there's marshland at the end of 22L before a departing flight would reach the Rockaway Peninsula. The Rockaways are about 4-5 blocks wide at the point the flight overflew it at around 2000 feet and climbing.

LiveATC.net's archives don't have the JFK tower or Approach/Departure tapes from the 15th. I think the JFK scanner link has been down for a while.

The sun is setting around 7:00 in New York these days. The LiveATC.net radar shows that there were some heavy showers over parts of South Jersey, upstate New York, and east of Long Island at 7PM, but nothing near JFK.

No. PASSUR wouldn't show a missile. Just airplanes.

AWE 17 didn't take any unusual evasive action on takeoff from JFK, as far as I can tell. And it didn't return to JFK.

The only quasi-strange turn occurred when it was far inland over New Jersey. But Thursday's weather was pretty bad in some places around here due to rain bands from Ophelia and a front coming in from the west, so it might have just been avoiding turbulence.
