Gipper or gadfly?

By Salena Zito, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review Sunday, September 18, 2005

Allegheny County's Republican Committee should not consider the coming mayoral election as an inevitable failure. Bob O'Connor, poised to snatch the Grant Street throne from Tom Murphy, began his political identity as a registered Republican.

Yes, a Republican.

A brand of political philosophy that has not seen the light of day on Grant Street in more than 70 years now has a second cousin of sorts about to ace the general election.

O'Connor is not the first Democrat Pittsburgh mayor to start his career as a card-carrying member of the GOP; he joins ranks with the late maverick Pete Flaherty. For clarity's sake, both switched parties before entering the political process.

Denominations aside, O'Connor has eyed the mayoral prize for more than a decade. But he would be wise to heed the old adage to be careful what you wish for: Pittsburgh is not some glammed-up Cracker Jack prize. It's on the precipice of extinction.

Pittsburgh is a liberal rat cesspool. They vote for rat mayors everytime and now they are bankrupt. A more moderate rat mayor in O'Connor will not solve their troubles and is hardly cause for celebration.
