I've had 2 CDs get "the rot" out of my 300. Unfortunately, they were favorites and were pretty rare. Fortunately, I found replacements on eBay as new ones were unavailable.

Reply #137. I re-downloaded several songs from Sony's Connect music service after a hard drive crash, no problem, just had to log in. No reason Apple couldn't do the same.

dont know if anyone answered this for you but in a couple neat ways. The ipod has a little stand that it sits on that plugs into the USB port. Your computer sees this just like an external hard drive and plays it from there.

In your home stereo you can hook it up through the headphone jack or use a spiffy FM tuner that sends what is on the ipod to a channel ( not being used by any station, it has been set aside for this use) just like a radio station does. You can then control the sound through your car or home stereo. Of course the advantage of this is that you can carry your music home and to the car and office.
If you do not want to put the cash out now for an ipod the cell phone industry is getting in on the ipod business and you will be able to store your music on your cell and plug in headphones and thus eleminating another peice of equipment you carry. There are some phones that are already able to store mp3s( that is the file form) but larger storage will be coming in about a year or less.

You shouldn't blame Apple for this. All these restrictions on music that you purchase are imposed by the recording industry.

Why not? Other on-line music vendors have this feature, why not Apple?

I thought of going in this direction, but it's still cheaper to buy music by CD if you want every song on the CD/Album. Also, you have maximum flexibility with CDs. Now I buy the CD and put it on my computer. I plan on getting an ipod for Christmas and will transfer those tunes to my iPod. The sampling rate is higher from a CD than from iTunes or Napster. Speaking of Napster, I bought a bunch of music from them, then I got a virus and had to reset my computer, suddenly I could no longer play my Napster music which I had paid for. I wrote Napster and they sent my 4 pages of instructions (not kidding) on how to restore my music. Right! Also, iTunes doesn't play on Napster devices, and I fear evaporation of playing rights if you get a virus. With a CD, you can always reload if you get a virus, your hard drive or iPod craps the bed. For now it's CDs for me.

This is all very interesting. Thank you for taking the time to respond. I'm getting closer and closer to getting one of these little buggers.

Moving the music to iPod and then selling the CD that you ripped from is a copyright violation, illegal under U.S. law. Be careful, folks.

Can you connect other USB devices besides the iPod to your PC and have the machine recognize them?

To be honest, I have never tried plugging anything in the USB port -- until the ipod came along....

If not, then you do have a problem with either the USB ports or drivers on your computer. You can check the status of the USB devices on your PC by (assuming you have Win XP) -

Click Start, then select Control Panel. Select the System icon, the click the Device Manager button. You should see listings for Universal Serial Bus (USB) controllers. If the listed devices have yellow exclamation marks next to them, then there is some kind of problem with the device. You right click the device and then select Properties to see what's wrong.

I don't see anything even remotely related to USB devices by clicking on those buttons. Should I? (I guess I should).

If other USB devices work on the computer, then you have a problem with your iTunes installation or maybe with your iPod. Did you run the latest iPod Installer when you bought the iPod?

Yes, I did that -- it has the most current itunes software installed on it...

Is the iPod formatted to work with a Windows PC? If it was formatted on a Mac, then a Windows computer will not recognize it without special software such as XPlay. I don't know if it is formatted for a windows pc....i tried downloading the Service Pack 2 Microsoft software (took over 6-7 HOURS to download on a 56k), and then when I tried to install it....well, it said it couldn't install...

Plug the iPod into the USB port, then hold the up arrow and center button on the wheel down for about 10 seconds. The iPod will reset and chat with the USB port. My wife had the same problem. There is a checkbox in the advanced section of the iTunes preferences that allows you to expose the USB hard disk subunit of the iPod to Windows as a removable disk. My wife uses her iPod to offload pictures from her digital camera while we are traveling. The files are available directly from the iPod USB disk.

I tried re-setting it - per the ipod instructions - to no avail. By the way, I have a VERY BASCI ipod (the little white one about two inches long...it doesn't have an "up arrow"....just "+", "-", "<-" and "->" buttons on the wheel...with a pause/play button in the middle...I uninstalled the ipod/itunes software and re-installed it...with the same result.

I'll review the instructions I gave you above tomorrow, when I'm back in front of a PC, to make sure I didn't lead you astray (I'm at home on a Mac right now so I can't check). But assuming I didn't give you wrong info, if you couldn't see USB devices under Device Manager, you've definitely got some sort of problem there. If you can borrow a USB device (maybe a friend's digital camera), you can try to hook it up and see if your computer will recognize it.

Regarding the Service Pack 2, what error message did you get when you tried to install it?

I have a 512MB shuffle as well. I would grab a copy of the latest iTunes 5.0 and the iPod updater to get the current firmware in hand. Once that is loaded, plug the iPod into the USB port. Run the updater first to ensure the firmware is the current rev level. After that, start up iTunes. If you have a directoy of iTunes music that isn't appearing in iTunes, just use File->Add Folder. That works well if you have manually added AAC files to the directory tree that iTunes hasn't acknowledged in the library.

iTunes 5.0 download

iPod Shuffle support

iPod updater software

I'll give that a try -- if I can find someone I know (I'm relatively new here to Canada) who has a digital camera (or something else) that plugs into a USB port..

Regarding the Service Pack 2, what error message did you get when you tried to install it?

I don't rightly remember what the error message was....it took several hours to download it -- I was in front of the computer at 3:30 am to make sure it downloaded.....it was just some sort of a message that said the download was unable to proceed.....odd, I thought too....perhaps it was because the Service Pack 2 was downloaded in bits (had to restart the computer twice while it was downloading) -- and that affected it....nonetheless, the whole program WAS downloaded....

I did a little poking around with those error codes - as far as I can tell the first one you gave has to do with network connectivity issues. If you have access to a high speed internet connection, This could be related to a firewall or maybe anti-virus software you have installed.

I'd try reinstalling SP2, making sure that you disable any firewall or anti-virus software you have running first. If that doesn't work, I'd assume your downloaded file was corrupted somehow (especially if you had to restart several times). I'd try to download it again using a machine with a high speed internet connection, assuming you have access to one. I've found that using dial-up to get really huge files can sometimes be flaky.

Word to the wise about your attic. I live in MA and even with a sensitive attic fan and air conditioned house, plastics don't last long up there.

Admirable project you have there.
