Recruits Sought for Porn Squad
WAPO ^ | September 20, 2005 | Barton Gellman

Posted on 09/19/2005 9:58:03 PM PDT by LesbianThespianGymnasticMidget

The FBI is joining the Bush administration's War on Porn. And it's looking for a few good agents. Early last month, the bureau's Washington Field Office began recruiting for a new anti-obscenity squad. Attached to the job posting was a July 29 Electronic Communication from FBI headquarters to all 56 field offices, describing the initiative as "one of the top priorities" of Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales and, by extension, of "the Director." That would be FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III. Mischievous commentary began propagating around the water coolers at 601 Fourth St. NW and its satellites, where the FBI's second-largest field office concentrates on national security, high-technology crimes and public corruption. The new squad will divert eight agents, a supervisor and assorted support staff to gather evidence against "manufacturers and purveyors" of pornography -- not the kind exploiting children, but the kind that depicts, and is marketed to, consenting adults. "I guess this means we've won the war on terror," said one exasperated FBI agent, speaking on the condition of anonymity because poking fun at headquarters is not regarded as career-enhancing.

"...speaking on the condition of anonymity because poking fun at headquarters is not regarded as career-enhancing."

Why should the FBI be any different from any other hierarchy?

Thats a good question - I almost double checked the date on this story! If they were declaring an all out war on kiddie porn ( but they are not as stated in the story ) I could understand the gusto coming from the FBI office. But this makes no sense at all.

Well, it's the WAPO so take any whistleblower comments with a grain of salt. Or maybe a pillar of salt.

Adult porn isn't all fun and games, people. Re Extreme Associates' scumbag operation out in the Valley. Ashcroft was pursuing obscenity convictions against these creeps; so far as I know, they will be convicted, and will more than deserve it.

Yech. I've got to go, so can't follow up this evening; but if anyone's interested, Salon did an article on one of Extreme's operators, Janet Romano. Do a search for her 'screen name', Lizzie Borden, and bring a barf bag.

They must be really hard up for cases. I'd say they needed a good spanking.

Ashcroft was pursuing obscenity convictions against these creeps...

...and then all charges were dismissed by the District Court back in January. DOJ is, as far as I know, appealing that dismissal, but by the time it gets back to a trial court, Alberto will be looking for a new job anyway.

I just think there are far more important issues for the FBI to consider. As near as I remember porn ( as bad as it is) falls under ' free speech ' and there was a bench ruling on this some time ago.

Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales is one sick puppy. He is totally obsessed with putting ADULT pornographers out of business. Ashcroft was a silly prude (the great statue cover-up), but Gonzales has taken the anti-porn crusade to a new level.

My personal opinion is that Gonzales must have serious personal issues. He needs to get his priorities straight. Let the FBI agents do their job fighting terror and stop this obsession with porn.

They're not after 'adult porn' - they wouldn't find the required majority at the SCOTUS to pull that off. What they are seeking to put a quash on are videos of violence.. Forced rapes, beatings, bestiality, etc. Stuff that has long been considered 'obscene' by the courts (as well as the communities by which the standards are measured.)

If your local porn shop carried these products, they'd likely be shut down, but there are mail order outfits that thrive on these productions.

I'm rather libertarian when it comes to these types of things - if everyone was happy with their part in the production, then whatever. I've never been really into the nanny state mentality, but I can understand the argument that the largest consumer of these productions aren't husband and wives, but budding rapists and violent offenders who use these videos to muster the courage to do it to a real woman.

(The strict constructionist side of me thinks that this is a really good reason for a woman to be packing firepower along with whatever else goes into a purse.)

I understand what the government is seeking, I understand what the writer is trying to imply (ooh, look, they're gonna go bust people that make them blush), but if you found these tapes in someone's closet you wouldn't be having a quiet talk, you'd be looking for professional help for them.

You approve of bestiality? Of videotaping rapes that are so real that investigations have been opened in many municipalities to see if someone was actually raped? Videos with people slapped around more than you'd see in a boxing match?

The author of the article was intending on eliciting a reaction just like yours. He was successful.

Well, it's a dirty job, but someone has to collect the evidence. After all that porn is downloaded it will have to be carefully analyzed and sent to the AG's office for a final review!
