I know next to nothing about Texas; I see a lot of people saying the Katy area; is that safe?

Pretty much - its mostly prairie/farmland (or used to be) out this way. There is the Brazos River and Jones and Oyster Creeks but I dont look for those latter two to flood. I grew up here and have never heard of the Creeks leaving their banks. The Brazos however, is another matter, but we wont see that until weather goes upstream. but Im still not worried, because they have done much in the way of drainage here.
If you have a map, find Hwy 59 and go south. You will see Richmond along the way. Katy is almost directly north, on Intertate 10.

Spoke with family and friends from Corpus, Galveston, Poet Arthur, (I am from South Texas originally).
Most were headed up toward Athens. Some are going to San Antonio.
Do I understand you correctly that even there it's "Katy bar the door?"
I am a bit confused as my family, friends related that they had been told to head at least as far North-North West as San Antonio. Is there later information?
Thanks.

What about Splendora, Texas? My aunt and cousin live in Splendora and were boarding up and taping up windows, which sounds sort of like weak protection in this storm.

I have friends in Pasadena...how bad do you think it will be there? According to a simulation run on the Houston Chronicle website, if Rita is a Cat 4 at landfall, Pasadena is right at the edge of the storm surge area.
That's too damned close for comfort for me.

You want to come ride it out with us? If my power fails, probably so.
I hope to remain at the Manor though as I'll be harboring evacuee psycho cats.
Mom is heading to the North side but not to a cat-friendly environment.
